If you were asked to physically describe what a GUARD DOG breed would look like, the PRESA CANARIO would come to mind. The PRESA was bred to be a CATCH DOG (a dog used to catch large animals in hunts) a farm dog and guard throughout its history.
.
.

A large, muscular and athletic dog weighing in at around 130lbs. It’s a beast of a dog with fluidity, a slight attitude problem and a commanding presence which places it a HIGH INTIMIDATION factor. Dog and human aggression is also a concern. Firm training, early socialization and a direction of what you want from your dog is recommended.
.
.

The breed has caught the attention of many large dog enthusiast in recent years. As mentioned in the criteria breakdown, DEFENSE drive is the backbone of an optimal GUARD DOG. Its the second dog on the list (behind the CANE CORSO) featuring a balance of both drives, rather than just high DEFENSE. In my opinion the PRESA is better balanced dog than the CANE making it a more suitable choice as a sport or personal protection dog and therefore gaining a notch on this list.
.
.

Overall the PRESA isn’t the definition of a guard dog as would the TIBETAN MASTIFF or the NEO but because of its balance of drives, fierce loyalty for its family and the ability to further develop as a protection dog sets this breed apart from the others.
.
.

Some defaults: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Epilepsy, Entropion (Cherry eye) and for male dogs Crytorchidism (where one testicle does not descend) Maturation is slow in this breed as is the majority of all MASTIFF. The dogs take well to both warmer and colder climates, preferring cooler.
