Often I hear conflicting advice on when to begin training. It’s safe to say if training began at 8 weeks or 8 months, in the end the dog will be at the same level as an adult.

.

“Let them be a puppy” was an old school method which recommended not starting until 6 month old. For WORKING or SPORT homes this makes sense but for someone wanting their pet to be a fully functional member (immediately), this can be disastrous.
.
.

This originated with the idea that a young puppy wasn’t mentally strong enough to handle the rigors of a correction from a choke chain until 6 months old, where they’re physically able to take such corrections. Note: OLD SCHOOL

Any trainer bringing home a puppy will begin crate training, housebreaking, scheduling, leash breaking as soon as they bring a pup home. So why not begin then, as WAIT FOR IT “everyday if you like it or not you’ll be inadvertently training them anyways” let me add with today’s new METHODS and with every pup and situation different, it’s possible to train without stressing them.
.
.

Whether a pup is 8, 10 or 12 weeks bringing them home to begin is like a blank canvas. Puppies are like children, in that you want to teach them to be self sufficient in your household. Every experience whether it’s bad or good, every smell, every bite, what they see, a reward or correction is training. A puppy take its cues from how you deal with them, it becomes life in TRIAL and ERROR. In an essence every minute of every day, is training.
.
.

So why not take advantage of their young age before allowing bad habits to begin, showing how you’d like life with them, your family and household to be. For those owners with EXTRA LARGE DOGS, it’s easier to handle and correct a 3 month old at 40lbs, than a 8 month old at 100lbs. Lastly, starting training early can be beneficial to prevent bad habits and problems from forming than to solve them when their older and more willing to disobey.
