In less than 70 years, a military ran kennel in the former Soviet Republic produced more breeds of dogs than any other group in human history. One of those breeds was the MOSCOW WATCHDOG which came about when dog fanciers in the army’s “Red Star kennel" coveted a more even tempered guard dog than they were producing.

With the foundation a CAUCASIAN OVCHARKA the new breed needed to be domesticated for civilian living. Adding SAINT BERNARD helped to produce a calmer dog while maintaining size and strength. Other additions were the GERMAN SHEPHERD, RUSSIAN WOLFHOUND and the now extinct RUSSIAN HARLEQUIN HOUND. These breeds eventually added the final touch that produced the type of dog that they seek, a perfect servitude dog.

Today the breed is becoming popular in EUROPE where it is known as a gentle giant, highly patient and extremely tolerable but we mustn’t forget, it’s still a Red Star bred GUARD DOG that will protect its master at all cost.

Wrap up: this breed can be huge, up to 200lbs. Very hardy and generally a healthy breed with little known ailments. They’re a fair weather breed boding well in most conditions, hotter regions should reconsider. Hip dysplasia is always a concern for any large breed. A plus is that the breed doesn’t salivate as would other Mastiff style dogs.
