Jumping is a common complaint when it comes to dog ownership. When you come home from a long day of work, your dog incessantly jumps happy to see you or god forbid you’re all dressed up to go to a party and your dog jumps on you and now your wardrobe and possibly night is ruined. Let alone having company over and your dog doesn’t know how to act and begins jumping on them the minute they walk in and you wonder how all this began.
.
.

What’s funny is that it could have all been resolved when your dog was a puppy and you played a major role in perpetuating the behavior and didn’t know it. When your dog was a puppy and he came to greet you, he jumped on your leg and you began petting and playing with him unintentionally cultivating this behavior and with every praise it you reinforced what would eventually become a nuisance.

.

Now that we’ve identify where you went wrong and for those new puppy owners reading this firstly don’t allow your puppy to jump on you. Instead, teach the puppy to sit before being petted. Continue to reinforce the SIT command every time you greet your puppy. After some time, he’ll understand in order to get praised or your attention, he must sit first. Continue with the same plan when he greets anyone else, family members, friends and strangers always making sure that he SITS before he is acknowledged. Before you know it, he’ll get the hang of it and it will become second nature to SIT instead of jumping when you come home.
