The use of prosthetic’s have been around for centuries, Ancient Greek and Roman literature referenced some of the earliest historical accounts of prosthetic limbs in stories and poems. In the year 2000, researchers in Cairo, Egypt, unearthed what they believe to be the oldest documented artificial body part a prosthetic toe made of wood and leather. The device, found attached to the nearly 3,000-year-old mumified remains of an Egyptian noblewoman, is a good representation of how little prosthetic limbs have changed throughout history.

The fact that humans love of dogs is not surprising that Prosthetic’s would eventually become an option to dog owners facing an amputation(s). Early veterinary practices believed that a dog with 3 legs would manage just as well as if it had all fours. Although this may be true, with medical advances it’s a no brainier to fork over the $600 to $800 per limb and buy a leg or four for your furever friend.

This picture represents an early bull terrier with a fitted prosthetic (circa early 1900’s) Someone asked if I thought the dog lost his leg in a dog fight, I replied NO if the dog was a “fighting dog” then he’d have evidence of scars on his face, legs and body and this dog clearly doesn’t.
