The Hush Puppies shoe company gained its inspiration to name it in 1958 by the company’s first sales manager, James Muir. While on a sales trip in Southeastern United States he noticed that farmers and hunters would throw Southern cornballs (Hush Puppies) to their barking and howling Basset Hounds to quiet the dogs down. As the story goes, “barking dogs” was another name for sore feet and Muir thought to himself that people could, “quiet their barking dogs” with these shoes. The Basset Hound continues to be the shoe brand’s mascot.

The BLOODHOUND is known as the best scent dog in the business with the BASSET HOUNDS a close second. Bassets have over 220 million smell receptors versus a human with about five million and the portion of their brains responsible for the sense of smell is 40 times that of a human’s as well.

A BASSET HOUNDS floppy ears actually serve a practical purpose. Bassets have one of the best senses of smell of all breeds and their ears have a lot to do with it. While tracking prey, the breeds ears would sweep up scent toward the dogs nose while the loose skin or dewlap at the BASSET HOUNDS throat, would help trap scent to amplify the dog’s already powerful olfactory ability. Being short to the ground also helped.
