In Finland as well as here in the States theyre called KARELIAN BEAR DOG. In Russia they continue to insist to call them the Russo-European Laika. To sum it up, the breed is nearly identical but the two (2) countries continue to accept this to be true. The differences lead to a separation that inevitably resulted in a split into their respective type. Although the lines remain almost identical, the two (2) countries usually don’t interbreed which has created a slightly different breeds. The Finnish Karelian Bear Dog is slightly less powerful and less aggressive than its Russian cousin who’s a tad bit larger and aggressive dog.

The KBD were mainly used for hunting moose, lynx, wolf, squirrels and as its name suggest, hunting the Eurasian brown bear. During hunts for bears, at least a pair of KBD’s would be used to flush the animal, barking loudly, in order to distract the bear while the hunter would come in for the kill.

Today Karelian Bear Dogs are mainly used as BEAR control, to deter Bears from coming close suburban life and used for bear control at Yosemite and Glacier national parks, and with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
