When you think of the word HOUND, a dog with long ears and a strong nose usually comes to mind. So when one sees an OTTERHOUND the breed with a rough, double coat and webbed feet, that visual doesn’t materialize. The OTTERHOUND is a unique HOUND dog in that it’s a combo scent and water dog, not very common in the HOUND group.

OTTERHOUND’s are one of the most endangered purebred dog breeds in the world with less than 400 registered in the United States.

The breed gained its name recognition as far back as the 1100’s when it was known as “otter dogges” and were was once a pack hunter and eventually a sport dog to hunt Otter’s that were killing off the fish populations in Lakes and Rivers.

The OTTERHOUND of today has didn’t quite look like the dog until several rough-coated French hound breeds were added and BLOODHOUND to increase its scent abilities. The breed are known to be upwards to 150lbs, possibly due to the blood hound blood.

Known for their coats, what’s different of this breed is any color or combination of colors is acceptable in the OTTERHOUND coat, although some variation of black and tan with grizzle markings is most common. Very few purebreds have loosely based color standards.

It’s not uncommon for an OTTERHOUND to submerge their entire head when taking a drink, rather than lapping from the surface like any other dog breeds, wetting their entire face in the process.
