If the Borzoi was human, doesn’t it remind anyone of a Supermodel? Tall, slender with an Aristocratic background.

The Borzoi was once known as the Russian Wolfhound for its hunting ability of wolves and small prey. In 1936 the name was changed to the Borzoi (translates to “fast” in Russian)The Borzoi originated in Russia as a prized hunting dog, bred by aristocrats as a coursing sighthound. It is believed that its predecessors were ancient sighthound breeds dating back to Egyptian times crossing with now extinct native dogs of Russia.

According to the American Kennel Club, “from the time of Ivan the Terrible in the mid-1500s to the abolition of serfdom in 1861, hunting with Borzoi was the national sport of the aristocracy.” It was during these times that hare coursing became popular as well as the pursuit of wolves where the hunts were
extravagant affairs involving elaborate attire, feasting and festivity. The breed was pampered and promoted by Russian royalty on a grand scale unparalleled in the development of any other breed.

In 1842 Princess Alexandra of Britain were sent several Borzoi as gifts. Many of the offspring were exhibited at the first Crufts World Dog Show in 1891. In 1863, the Imperial Association was formed to protect and promote the old-style Borzoi. Many present day bloodlines can trace back to dogs and breeders who were members of this club.

The first Borzoi in America was brought from England in 1889 by a fancier of the breed living in Pennsylvania. The Borzoi Club of America was formed in November of 1903, with the breed still called the “Russian Wolfhound” The official breed standard was formally adopted in 1905 and is essentially remains the same today, with minor revisions. The breed’s name was changed from Russian Wolfhound to Borzoi in 1936, and the parent club’s name changed to the Borzoi Club of America that same year. The breed today is largely unchanged from its Russian ancestors in both appearance and ability.
