Socialization is an everyday thing with dogs but the most important time to begin imprinting your puppy for YOUR life is the minute you bring them home. It’s widely accepted that between 4 to 12 weeks of age, puppies absorb their environment immensely. It’s crucial to carefully introduce different types of stimuli every day to your puppy and always making sure that it’s a positive experience.

These isolated socialization efforts can and will make a difference in your dog’s future outlook of life. In time with different experiences and as the puppy begins to become comfortable familiarizing with new things, they’ll begin to take on new encounters like different places, loud noises, objects, new people, shopping carts, smells and other animals with stride.

The key to socialization is to get to it while the puppy is young. Many pups can become socially handicapped if socializing begins after a certain time, usually 14 weeks of age but it depends on the dog, breed and how you approach the job at that time. It’s not to say that a pup can’t still be socialized but in many respects, the job is harder. At this stage a pup not only is learning basic of commands but has already established other inappropriate behaviors that need to be undone firstly before moving forward in positive socializing. In any case, the best thing to do with your puppy is to approach it in a preventative manner.
