Almost anyone can identify a Bloodhound when they see one in television and movies. They appear somewhat clumsy and big but when in front of one, it is when you’ll truly appreciate the breed, its size and presence.

There are scent hounds and there are sight hounds, dogs that hunt by scent and those that hunt by sight, respectively. The Bloodhound is one of the oldest breeds that hunt by scent, with a nose unlike any other breed in the Dog Kingdom. The breed traces its history back to the St. Hubert hounds, an ancestors of today’s bloodhounds.

Mr. Hubert’s was a 7th-century French monk who bred hound dogs for hunting large game. Around the same time in other parts of Europe, other large game hunting breeders had their idea of a Hound dog as well. History has it that the St Hubert dogs and the other dogs blended together to eventually produce today’s dogs. Today in many French-speaking parts of Europe, Bloodhounds are still known as St. Hubert hounds.

The first time the bloodhound began man-trailing was in the 16th century and since then has been the premier human trailer instead of the large game dog it was once used for.
Man-trailing has enjoyed a steady increase in modern day law enforcement and search and rescue. Scent trails performed by proven trailing Bloodhounds are permissible in court and has been used many cases.

Bloodhounds are shy by nature but known to be affectionate and well-mannered especially to children. The brawny hunting dog of yesteryears is now a big sensitive lap dog that takes well to kindness and correction by their master. On a personal note, I’ve found them to be a patient breed but stubbornly “Stubborn” and its important to note, “Patience” doesn’t equate to easily trainable. Due of their restless nature to trail scent, they are easily distracted.

One of the larger breeds in the Hound group, at well over a 100lbs and almost 30in tall at the shoulders, it’s a big Hound dog so early and firm training is recommended as well socialization to help build confidence and avoid future shyness.
