MY FAVORITE HOUND DOG COLLECTION CONTINUES….

The first citation of a “basset” style dog appeared in La Venerie, an illustrated hunting text written by Jacques du Fouilloux in 1585 which features dogs hunting foxes and badgers. The Basset Hound originated in sixth-century France, a country known for its many strains of hounds. What is not commonly known, at the time many strains of hounds had a tall version as well as a short-legged version which stood under sixteen inches, which were called “basset”(bas in French means low-set).

The most common belief is that the Basset type originated as a mutation in the litters of Norman Staghounds, a descendant of the St Hubert’s Hound (the predecessor to the Bloodhound) The original Bloodhounds were used for hunting from horseback by aristocratic families but the short-legged dogs were highly valued for hunting on foot. with their long ears helping to capture scent (much like the Bloodhound) packs of Bassets were used to drive small prey from dense undercover into open fields where hunters could move in for the kill. The sport of pack hunting with Basset Hounds continues to this day in France and England.
