The first dog show after the War was held at the Castel dell’Ovo in Naples, Italy on Oct 12,1946, an admirer of Mastino’s Piero Scanziani would be smitten with a dog would at this show.
.
.

Mr. Scanziani found Guaglione, a Neapolitan Mastiff but before he can purchase him, he was sold to a man named Carmine Puolo. Relentless in his obsession to obtain Guaglione, he’d eventually purchase the dog and a bitch named Pacchiana.
.
.

The pair would be the future foundation stock of the wrinkled, heavily boned, lethargic “Neapolitan Mastiff” of today. Within months Mr. Scanziani would write up a breed standard using Guaglione’s as his sample and by 1951 he’d crown his dog the first Italian “Champion”
.
.

This is an example of how new breeds and fads are created. Labradoodles, Malti Poo’s, Goldendoodles, etc are examples of dogs that “supposedly” are better than the original breed and by crossing them a better breed will come out. TRUE almost every breed came out of this idea but not in the first or second generation as many of these “breeders” attest to.
.
.

It took the acquisition of dogs, invention of a history and story behind it, create/breed some examples, create a breed standard based on those samples and make them the champion. What’s bothersome about this story is what would eventually become of the breed. When show people are given control of the standard, what they deem ideal for that generation is written up and recognized. We’ve come to a crossroads where dogs are being physically dismantled and broken down for the almighty dollar without much care of what future generations will deal with.
.
.

In the Scanziani Neo his game plan was adding what supposedly the dog was used for; war, hunting, guard work and a gladiator yet they never were since the story was fabricated. As a gladiator dog? The Roman coliseum was in ruins the day this dog was created.
.
.

Upon being added to the list of dogs that AKC registers, it was placed in the “working dog” category.
