In a recent post I stated my opinion that the Argentine Dogo is not a MASTIFF. This isn’t a diss to the creators (the Martinez family) nor am I trying to disenfranchise anyone about the breed. In fact this is one of the few breeds that was created in recent times that is functional and PURPOSE DRIVEN and I truly like. As @hbains707 commented in my post, “I don’t think he (Dr. Martinez) intended any labels” I agree!

These were the breeds that influenced the DOGO to become the breed it is today. POINTER, BOXER, BULL TERRIER, BULLDOG, IRISH WOLFHOUND, DOGUE DE BORDEAUX, GREAT PYRENEES, GREAT DANE and the FIGHTING DOG of CORDOBA.

.

.

With that many breeds and less than half being “MASTIFF” (Bordeaux for their strength, Great Dane hunting ability and size, Great Pyrenees for size and it’s white color & Irish Wolfhound for its size and hunting ability) technically in terms of percentage, this mixture wouldn’t make it half a Mastiff, let alone a full blown Mastiff breed.

It is important to point out that the Fighting Dog of Cordoba (extinct today) was a breed established in Argentina and was its main ingredient to produce the DOGO. It was a mixture of Mastiff, Bulldog, Bull terrier and Boxer.

.

With Boxer, Bull terrier and Bulldog to add tenacity and go. Pointer and Irish Wolfhound adding the nose and hunting ability. If anything the Dogo is more of a Hunting/Coursing dog bred for extreme hunting rather than a cumbersome Mastiff.

If you make it down this far, thank you for reading as this is my opinion and I would be open to hear anyone’s comments about it.
