Historical accounts of dog fighting in the US …

Historical accounts of dog fighting in the US can be dated back a hundred or more years before the Civil War began but the betting and spectator sport of dog fighting would take off shortly after the Civil War ended. As immigrants made their way from England and Ireland to start a new life in America, they brought over with them dogs that were already flourishing in an underground fighting world after Bull and Bear baiting became illegal in the 1830’s.

Many of these dogs would eventually be crossbred to other game terriers to create the ultimate fighter: the American Pit Bull Terrier.
With many professional pits proliferating the America’s in the 1860’s, ironically dog fighting grew and continued to flourish well into the 20th century as a common entertainment with widespread support from the general public as well as elected officials and police officers and firemen with the “Police Gazette” serving as a major source of information into dog fighting for many years thereafter.

.
.

With concerns about the inhumanness of dogfighting most states would eventually outlaw the activity and criminally incriminate those that did not stop. Henry Bergh, founder of the ASPCA, would spearhead this endeavor as he was repulsed by the brutality of the dog fighting he saw in New York and elsewhere. He would revise the states animal cruelty law in 1867 which would make all forms of animal fighting illegal for the first time, including bull, bear, dog and cock fighting.

.
.

The sad but definite truth was the involvement of police officials in dog fighting activity and this was one of the reasons Bergh sought and received authority for the ASPCA at the time to have arrest powers for his own humane law enforcement agents to enforce these tough new laws.
