The now extinct Bullenbeisser was a rough hunt…

The now extinct Bullenbeisser was a rough hunting Bulldog from Germany. It wasn’t uncommon for wild animals (Wolves, Bears, and Boars) from neighboring countries like Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic to wander into Germany as a few hundred years ago the countryside was heavily forested.

Big Game Hunting with a Bullenbeisser would of been awe inspiring to see, an original rough and tough bulldog that was bred for the hunt. Where England early on transformed its native bulldogs to be more civilized, for many years thereafter Germans Nobles were still hunting Bullenbeisser for its original purposes.

.

But their reign would be short-lived as the Bullenbeisser eventual extinction would come by the intentional crossbreeding to other breeds rather than by the deterioration of the breed. Case in point in the late 1870s, German breeders Roberth, Konig, and Hopner would use the Bullenbeisser to create a new breed, with many breeders focusing on this new dog, what today we call the Boxer and letting the once prominent Bullenbeisser become extinct.

.

Was it a fighting dog, I’m sure the breed had been tried here and there in a pit but its usefulness for hunting and the wanting to eliminate the excessive white color of the new Boxer breed at the time, this German Bulldog would eventually fade away in history.
