Nobody surely knows when the first collar was …

Nobody surely knows when the first collar was strapped on a dogs neck but I’m of the theory that the bond between dog and human began the day a wolf cub was taken from its mother, a collar was placed and ownership and domestication began.

Written human history of the Egyptians has shown us that they were the first to introduce the use of collars on their dogs. It is believed that Egyptian royalty used collars for decorative (fashion) and possibly for identification. Dogs for purposes such has hunting and protection would also utilize a type of collar in Egyptian times but it wasn’t until the Ancient Greeks and Romans that purposeful metal, leather and spike collars evolved and collars took a more menacing route.

It is believed that Greek farmers constructed the first spiked collars as a way of protecting their dogs throats from attacking wolves that targeted livestock and the dogs protecting them. Otherwise known as “wolf collars” these collars were normally made of a metal, usually iron fitted with elongated spikes to protect and stop wolves from attacking a dogs neck while at the same time being used as a weapon.

The Romans took collars on their dogs a step further as it would identify the role of position and job for a dog. Romans were so devoted to their dogs that Caesar reportedly had to publicly reprimand citizens for paying more attention to their dogs than to their children. Upper class Roman woman didn’t keep dogs as pets but more so as an accessory who wore collars made of jewels and metals.

Modern dog collars are a reflection of our ancient pass. Although collars aren’t made by metals craftsmen, saddle or shoe makers they still utilize quality materials manufactured by companies that specialize in dog collars. Two of the most common materials are leather and nylon.
