Recently I wrote about spring poles, an exercise tool listed on the “dog fighting paraphernalia” list. Another tool on the list that is possibly the most important is a “Break Stick”

.
.

A Break-Stick is a wooden or hard plastic stick (pictured above) about 12 inches long (think: broom stick) with one end shaped into a wedge. The shape enables the person to “wedge” the stick into a dogs mouth to “break” and release the bite of a determined Pit Bull or similar bulldog/terrier breed.

.
.

* A quick to how to use: Remember to keep calm. If someone is present to help, each person grab a dog by its collar and straddle over them (if only you, tether a leash to a support like a post or tree and link one of the dogs to it) begin pulling in the opposite direction inserting the wedge end of the stick behind the molars and twist. This action will cause the dog to readjust its bite onto the stick and in turn giving you leverage to pull apart from the fight and regain control.

.
.

Lastly I like to add a “break stick” will not work on most other breeds, due to the way they bite. When other breeds of dog bites, they usually bite in an erratic manner, snapping and often releasing only to bite again. This is the opposite of what a Pit Bull does and exactly why it doesn’t work for other breeds.

.
.

Note: this information is NOT meant to promote dog fighting but to educate and help those that would possibly encounter a situation where this information might be helpful. This information IS meant to prepare one for the usage of breaking an accidental fight and what to do to diffuse it quickly. It should also be noted any potential and present owners of fighting breeds understand the characteristics and history of their respected breeds. Responsibility falls on the owner to be vigilant, to protect and prevent any fights. All owners of “Bull breeds” should know anytime one gets in a fight, you will be blamed even if your dog didn’t start it.
*Due to legal issues, you may use a “plastic tent stake” (swipe next pic) the same manner as a break stick.
