Pomeranians today are small lap dogs but that was not always the case. Poms, were sled dogs and herded larger animals. Originally, Pom’s came in all white and weighed an average of 30 pounds. It wasn’t until the 19th century, when they were bred down to become a companion dog. The gene for the bigger Poms is still present in the breed today. Some litters will get a “throwback” Pom, a dog resembling their larger ancestors in both size and behavior.

Poms have rubbed shoulders with some of history’s greatest creative minds. Mozart dedicated one of his finished arias to his pet Pomeranian, Pimperl. Frédéric Chopin, inspired by his friend’s pet Pomeranian chasing his tail, wrote the song “Waltz of the Little Dogs” and Michelangelo pet Pom was sitting below watching as he painted the Sistine Chapel.

Many breeds of dogs come in only a few colors and combinations. Pomeranians on the other hand have 23 color combinations that are accepted by the American Kennel Club. These colors include beaver, sable, chocolate, black, orange, and white in addition to a number of combinations of those colors.

Blue Pomeranians are not classified as such because of the color of their fur. Instead, a blue Pomeranian is distinguished by the color of his nose.
