In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, English artisans fled to France looking for work bringing along with them little bull-dogs. These Bull-dogs would grow in popularity and eventually become the French Bulldog.

Known for their “Bat” ears, early in its history Frenchies had a “Rose” styled ear (think an English Bulldog) Wanting the breed to look more distinctive, breeders in America decided that BAT ears should be the standard.

A little known fact but of crucial influences was the popularity of the breed with “belles de nuit” (prostitutes). The ladies of the night are credited to first call them “Bouledogues Francais,” or French bulldogs. The name caught on quickly and spread from there.

The majority of Frenchie’s are bred through Artificial Insemination (AI) Due to their bulbous proportions, natural breeding almost never happens in modern days. Male dogs have a hard time due to risk of overheating and exhaustion. At the same time, the majority of females cannot perform natural births. C-sections is almost always performed due to possible complications. This has contributed to the higher prices of French Bulldog puppies today.

Flying with a Frenchie can potentially be an issue depending on your dog. Due to their smushed facial structure, breathing can be a problem. Couple with stress and pressure changes in a plane, only adds to the problem.
