You can purchase a solid door with the best locks, you can bullet proof your windows and even get an alarm but nothing beats owning a dog as it’s the best deterrent money can buy. The majority of law enforcement will attest to that last statement as a home with a dog is less likely to be burglarized.

.

.

A dog is an intangible a burglar has little answers to deal with. They can pick locks, break doors, climb buildings but once encountered by a dog, especially one that’s been properly trained to protect and commit, then odds are in you’re favor.

.

.

Before you get excited and go out to purchase a dog, read the rest of this post. “If a dog has never seen it, he wouldn’t know how to deal with it” My clients have heard me say this time and again, but what do I mean by this statement?

.

.

Let’s take this as an example, a dog is acquired for the purpose to protect, breeds such as Rottweilers and German Shepherd are usually thought of because of their history as a legitimate guard dog. Simply purchasing a “guard type dog” isn’t going to solve your protection needs.

.

.

Let’s go back to the quote, “if a dog has never seen it, he wouldn’t know how to deal with it” The majority of dogs especially one that hasn’t been formally trained would not know how to handle a legitimate situation such as a break-in or home invasion robbery because he’s never experienced an episode and wouldn’t know what to do. Although acquiring a breed is a good beginning, it’s only the beginning.

.

.

For a dog a little known instinct would kick in what’s called “fight or flight” and in many cases if given a chance to run the dog will do so. Now they’re is always the exception to the rule but in my experience I’ve dealt with many dogs choosing the flight versus the fight.

.

.

What one should know a “home protection dog” is just that and not a guard dog (a dog that is placed in an area to guard) and this is not a personal protection dog (a dog trained to protect your personal, similar to a K9 police dog) A home protection dog is for the purpose of defending ones home. This is a dog that is loyal to its family and household, obedient as well as super social. If one is in the market for a dog don’t trust the words of the breeder as their job other than finding a good home for the pup is to sell you the goods and that goes with telling you what you want to hear. Formal training is needed to fully have confidence that the dog will do the job if ever in a predicament.

.

.

In the end it takes training to achieve results, a reputable breeder will put genetics together but it training in the right direction will get the results.
