Recently I wrote about spring poles, an exercise tool listed on the “dog fighting paraphernalia” list. Another tool on the list that is possibly the most important is a “Break Stick”

.
.

A Break-Stick is a wooden or hard plastic stick (pictured above) about 12 inches long (think: broom stick) with one end shaped into a wedge. The shape enables the person to “wedge” the stick into a dogs mouth to “break” and release the bite of a determined Pit Bull or similar bulldog/terrier breed.

.
.

* A quick to how to use: Remember to keep calm. If someone is present to help, each person grab a dog by its collar and straddle over them (if only you, tether a leash to a support like a post or tree and link one of the dogs to it) begin pulling in the opposite direction inserting the wedge end of the stick behind the molars and twist. This action will cause the dog to readjust its bite onto the stick and in turn giving you leverage to pull apart from the fight and regain control.

.
.

Lastly I like to add a “break stick” will not work on most other breeds, due to the way they bite. When other breeds of dog bites, they usually bite in an erratic manner, snapping and often releasing only to bite again. This is the opposite of what a Pit Bull does and exactly why it doesn’t work for other breeds.

.
.

Note: this information is NOT meant to promote dog fighting but to educate and help those that would possibly encounter a situation where this information might be helpful. This information IS meant to prepare one for the usage of breaking an accidental fight and what to do to diffuse it quickly. It should also be noted any potential and present owners of fighting breeds understand the characteristics and history of their respected breeds. Responsibility falls on the owner to be vigilant, to protect and prevent any fights. All owners of “Bull breeds” should know anytime one gets in a fight, you will be blamed even if your dog didn’t start it.
*Due to legal issues, you may use a “plastic tent stake” (swipe next pic) the same manner as a break stick.

It was 1987 when I first came about this picture and I remember saying to myself “I want my dogs to do that” but the truth is I didn’t know what they were doing and who’s dogs are they?

.
.

I found out that the picture is of a well respected dog trainer and PitBull activist “Diane Jessup” and her dogs, working a Spring Pole. If you’re a true dogman and BULLDOG enthusiast, then you BETTER know who she is but what is a Spring Pole?

.
.

A Spring Pole is a conditioning tool used to develop grip and drive on dogs. It helps in building muscle tone, gripping power, wrestling skills and drive. Unfortunately, the law views this type of conditioning as unlawful, ownership of a “Spring Pole” can be seen as dog fighting paraphernalia and a violation of the law.
.
.

However viewed, this is a form of “tug of war” game for dogs. Today one can walk into a pet store and purchase the variety of “tug toys” to play a similar game your dog but because this type of item is associated with the Pit Bull breed, it’s frowned upon.
.

.

Many Dog men still condition their dogs by way of Spring pole and other methods such as “treadmills” It’s common to see a well conditioned dog latch onto a piece of leather attached at the end, bite down and hang til they tired only to go back again.
.

.
They’re many exercises, training regimens and information that have immense benefits to a dogs overall well being in building drives and conditioning that old school dog men used back in the days that today can be utilized but unfortunately aren’t shared due to fear of the law and pets possibly being confiscated.

Finally we get to mankind’s most perfect creation of the brutal sport we called dog fighting. The APBT, American Pit Bull Terrier.

.
.

It’s history is simple, if you’ve read any of my last post you’d understand how the breed was brought to this country by immigrants of Europe and perfected in the states for what it has become to be known for.

.

Pictured is Crenshaw’s Ch. Honeybunch, not only a winner in the (pit) but possibly the best producing dog of all time. The epitome of both worlds from a continuity stand point and ideals set forth from the community of dog men of the era before and after.

Pit Bulls were on the cover of Life Magazine (3x) more than any other dog

.

Sallie, a Pit Bull stood guard over dead and wounded Union soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg. She is immortalized in a Civil War monument in Pennsylvania.

.
.

Petey, the dog from The Little Rascals, was a Pit Bull. He was a game-bred dog that was casted to work with children. The dog is remembered all these years later as a fantastic pet.

.
.

Of the 51 dogs seized from Michael Vick’s dog-fighting ring in 2007, over 40 of them have been rehabilitated and gone on to loving homes. Four of them have even become therapy dogs.

.
.

Here is my problem with the above but true statement, if these dogs were truly “fighting dogs” technically the majority of the dogs wouldn’t have been able to be re-home. My opinion…. what you think?

The scars on this dogs face shows what he’s been through. This is what a dog fighting dog looks like, for those that question it. If a dog doesn’t have the scars to show for it then I doubt it’s a fighting dog and the person is making up stories…

.
.

Again I’m not a dog fighter, I’m only sharing and educating people of dogs and what to look for.

The idea of fighting dogs for sport was brought to America by European settlers with each country representing a different idea
and type of dog. Many of these breeds were crossbred to eventually create the American Pit Bull terrier.

.
.

Dogfighting quickly became a popular spectator and betting sport in the U.S. but by the 1860’s most states had outlawed it. Despite this, dog fighting has continued to flourish within the states with widespread support from the discreet public and law enforcement.

.
.

The Humane Society of the United States, estimates that at least 40,000 people are involved in the industry domestically and it is booming with a concentration in urban areas and the rural South.

What four lines can tell us about soundness in…

What four lines can tell us about soundness in conformation
.
.

Properly using the Four Lines of Balance requires observing a dog in person or using a photo of the dog in the correct position. Either mentally or actually drawing lines in a photo to recreate the four lines of balance.
.
.

The first illustration is a young American Pit Bull Terrier in the correct position to be examined. His hocks and front legs are perpendicular to the ground and the photo is straight from the side, level with the dog not looking down on it.
.
.

The first line is Line “A” line drawn on the dog’s top line. If you aren’t sure exactly where the dog’s top line begins, draw the line beginning past the head, beginning from its shoulder. The dog’s entire head must be above this line when held in a natural position.
.
.

Line “B” is the single most important line. This line starts at the dog’s pro-sternum and runs directly back past the end of the dog’s body. The pro-sternum is that pointy lump on the front of the dog’s chest. The pro-sternum almost always indicates the position of the dog’s point of shoulder. It is common for the pro-sternum line to be placed far too low on the dog’s body, so be aware of placing so the line divides the dog in a perfect half and balance.
.
.

For Line “C” imagine a line dropped from the dog’s point of rear to the ground. With the dog’s hocks absolutely perpendicular to the ground, the line should drop to the front of the dog’s rear toes.
.
.

Line “D” is drawn up the front leg of the dog, with the legs perpendicular to the ground. The balanced dog will have its entire neck in front of this line.

ριт вυℓℓ #7
.
Possibly the most controversial breed on the list, speak to an owner of a PIT BULL and you’ll hear positive and endearing comments. To everyone else, the breed is public enemy number one. Note: included in this ranking will be the AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER as they have similar temperaments and abilities for GUARD WORK, everything else, the breeds aren’t the same.
.
.
The PITBULL was bred to be a FIGHTING DOG, while the AM STAFF was the show counterpart. Throughout history it was widely known to be people friendly as aggressive dogs were not tolerated, so back then to tout the breed as a guard dog goes against the grain. True DOG MEN would have another breed protecting their kennel and property.
.
.
With an overwhelming loyalty of family and home, the right balance of DEFENSE and unlimited amount of PREY, guarding duties is second nature for a task as simple as a GUARD DOG. Add a great aptitude towards training, aloofness towards strangers, superb athleticism ranging from 30 to 80lbs and always on alert helps this breed to fit in an experienced home in need of a comparable GUARD DOG. Today the breed has evolved into an all around dog excelling in sport, service, police and even herding work.
.
.
Indiscriminate breeding of inferior dogs has lent to the majority of problems we see today. In recent years the breed has been misrepresented by both unfit ownership and media. Despite negative media reports the PITBULL excels with children due to their high toleration and even temper. Although the breed can be aggressive towards dogs and animals, early proper socialization, firm training and compatible ownership can control their behavior. Overall the PIT BULL is a cut above the rest in a smaller but just as powerful package .
.
.
Some defaults: Hip and Elbow dysplasia, heart disease and patella luxation. Otherwise a very hardy breed. Photo cred: tagged

Recently I wrote about spring poles, an exercise tool listed on the “dog fighting paraphernalia” list. I wanted to bring attention to possibly the most important tool on that list a “Break Stick”
.
.
A Break-Stick is a wooden or hard plastic stick (pictured above) about 12 inches long (think a thick broom) with one end shaped into a wedge. *Due to legal issues, you may use a “plastic tent stake” (swipe left and see it pictured) in the same manner as a break stick. This shape enables the person to “wedge” the stick into a dogs mouth to “break” (to release) the bite of a determined Pit Bull or similar bulldog/terrier breed.

If you have someone to help, each person grab a dog by its collar and straddle over them (if it’s only you, tether a leash to a support like a post or tree and link one of the dogs to it) begin pulling in the opposite direction inserting the wedge end of the stick behind the molars and twist. This is the opposite of how a Pit Bull bites and exactly why it works for them and not other breeds.
