Have you ever had a dog nip at your chin or ear? This is a more traditional or primal “hello” in dog language. *To avoid confusion, replace this behavior rather than discourage it. #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #professionaldogtrainer #professional #obedience #dogbehavior #dogbehaviorist #dogbehaviormodification #advice #help #dog #dogs #doglover #dogsofig #rescue #rescuedog #rescuedogs #rescuedogsofinstagram (at City of Bonham)

Lots of people ask about my opinion on dog parks and beaches, or other areas where dogs can be off-leash in number. Do I utilize those places? Yes, at the right time, and only on occasion. I am careful to ALWAYS pay attention to my dog and leave if I see an unruly or potentially aggressive dog around, or one that is too exuberant, pushy, or bad mannered (even if good-intentioned). Buck (pictured in his @cycledog collar) is almost 8 and is great with other dogs, I have been taking him to dog parks and beaches since he was a puppy, and he is dog social, so he is used to that. BUT, I only go on off-times, early in the morning like today. There are only a few dogs out which makes for a nicer play setting, and there is plenty of space for Buck to get away and sniff if he doesn’t feel like playing. Dogs do best in play groups of 4 max. What?! 4?! That’s not that many. I know! For that reason, when it’s too crowded, dogs are more likely to snap or fight because they are overwhelmed by the number of dogs (think about how you’d feel if you met 50 new people in 20 minutes). And yes, I ALWAYS bring treats with me! I do not give them to other dogs that come up to me and “discover” the treats in my pocket (this would teach the other dog to come up to people and bug them, which the owner may not want), but I always have them on hand to reinforce a recall if my dogs come back on their own, and for when I clip the leash back on when we leave. Additionally, I do not take very young puppies to the park, and I make sure I’ve already done some training with the dog before going to the off-leash area.

Dog greetings matter an enormous amount to a young puppy, but…

Dog greetings matter an enormous amount to a young puppy, but not all dogs are appropriate or friendly, or they might just come on too strong and scare your puppy. Here’s a clip of an appropriate interaction between Riley (a Rottweiler) and young puppy Steele, a Border Collie. Steele has met the other dogs in his family and is comfortable, but Riley is a new dog in a new place and is also quite a bit bigger than him. Notice how Riley wants to sniff him more and is air scenting (leaning in and sniffing the air near Steele) but is being very gentle and not rushing in and overwhelming him. She knows her size and is careful. Then she slowly goes for a butt sniff and when Steele moves away, she lets him. If this was an inappropriate greeting, the dog would follow and follow the puppy, despite the puppy moving away to feel more comfortable. If Riley was a pushy or inappropriate dog, this interaction could easily have been a negative one for Steele. This is why appropriate interactions are so important AND why I am discriminate about what other dogs my dogs meet. Don’t be afraid to tell someone that No, your dog can’t meet mine. You have to be responsible for the experiences of your puppy.

Splitting a dog’s focus can be a great way to overcome challenges. Use a positive activity while exposing your dog (safely) to a challenge using thresholds. You want to be at a distance that is slightly challenging. Overly challenging is counterproductive and damaging. *Leo, lab, has had trouble reacting to other dogs. He has tried to bite both the dogs in a down position. We progressed to this point. **In the photo Leo is working at a 5 foot threshold. #dogsofig #dogs #dog #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogobedience #obedience #dogbehavior #dogboarding #dogbehaviorist #dogbehaviormodification #best #behavior #behaviorist #k9 #k9trainer #k9training #dallas #dallastexas #texas Leo needs a home. Miles, black and white, came to us for help with socialization and reactivity. His new owners love to play the guitar but the sound would upset Miles.
