It’s not the word that a dog begins to understand, but the actual sound of the word attributed to the language being spoken. After hearing the word/sound “sit” many times, a dog will eventually associate it with the behavior.

.

.

An average dog identifies 150 or so words/sounds by association, with some dogs learning 250 or more. A Border Collie named Chaser takes the cake, it was reported that he knew the distinct names of 1022 objects including 800 different dog toys.

.

.

In multi-cultural homes, dogs are becoming multi-linguistic. Learning an object such as “ball” can be said in different languages yielding the same result.

Did you know?

.

•Historically ear cropping and tail docking was done for practical reasons, such as avoiding accidental amputations in the course of work (minimizing a potential injury)

*
*

•WAR dogs engaged in battle were easy targets for maiming. Therefore removal of ears and tails was done to lessen the chances.

*

*
•Fighting dogs ears were trimmed so to not allow an opponent an advantage in a pit.

*
*

•Breeders of certain breeds began the removal of ears and tails for cosmetic purposes to suit a breed standard. Even today, the American Kennel Club (AKC) deems the practices as “integral to defining and preserving breed character” in certain breeds

*
*

•Yet what many don’t know about the history was it also indicated if a dog was of working stock and not a pet, in which the dog was subjected to taxation.

It was 1987 when I first came about this picture and I remember saying to myself “I want my dogs to do that” but the truth is I didn’t know what they were doing and who’s dogs are they?

.
.

I found out that the picture is of a well respected dog trainer and PitBull activist “Diane Jessup” and her dogs, working a Spring Pole. If you’re a true dogman and BULLDOG enthusiast, then you BETTER know who she is but what is a Spring Pole?

.
.

A Spring Pole is a conditioning tool used to develop grip and drive on dogs. It helps in building muscle tone, gripping power, wrestling skills and drive. Unfortunately, the law views this type of conditioning as unlawful, ownership of a “Spring Pole” can be seen as dog fighting paraphernalia and a violation of the law.
.
.

However viewed, this is a form of “tug of war” game for dogs. Today one can walk into a pet store and purchase the variety of “tug toys” to play a similar game your dog but because this type of item is associated with the Pit Bull breed, it’s frowned upon.
.

.

Many Dog men still condition their dogs by way of Spring pole and other methods such as “treadmills” It’s common to see a well conditioned dog latch onto a piece of leather attached at the end, bite down and hang til they tired only to go back again.
.

.
They’re many exercises, training regimens and information that have immense benefits to a dogs overall well being in building drives and conditioning that old school dog men used back in the days that today can be utilized but unfortunately aren’t shared due to fear of the law and pets possibly being confiscated.

What is hydrocephalus in dogs?
There are two types of hydrocephalus in dogs: congenital which is present at birth and acquired.

.
.

Congenital hydrocephalus is a birth defect most often associated with a dome-shaped skull sometimes referred to as “water head” or “apple head” (chihuahua’s with round, smushed faces are often called the same) Clinical signs (symptoms) associated with congenital hydrocephalus include abnormal or spastic walking, changes in behavior, circling or falling over on one side, and failure to housetrain or learn basic commands. Dogs may not show any symptoms when very young.

.
.

Acquired hydrocephalus develops when the flow of CSF is blocked or altered by infection, tumor, or swelling. The most common cause of acquired hydrocephalus is a brain tumor. Clinical signs are similar to those of congenital hydrocephalus and include changes in behavior or training, circling, head pressing (a term used for pressing of the head up against a wall or other structure), listlessness, loss of vision, pacing, restlessness, and seizures.

.
.

Brachycephalic breeds (smushed faces dogs) such as English and French Bulldogs as well as Boston terriers and Pekingese, would fall into this category. Most small, toy and miniature breeds pushed for conformation are likely to be affected by Hydrocephalus.

.
.

Clinical signs consistent with hydrocephalus are usually all that is CT and MRI scans can also diagnose and give a definitive diagnosis. needed to make a presumptive diagnosis.

.
.

If caught early, hydrocephalus would be treated with corticosteroids to reduce CSF production and inflammation. In severe or chronic cases, anti-seizure medications will also be needed. Surgery to place a tube that runs from the open spaces in the brain to the abdomen (ventriculoperitoneal shunt) can be performed at some veterinary teaching or specialty hospitals. Success rates as high as 80% are reported in cases treated early.

Recently a 7 month miniature pincher was brought for evaluation. My client was told by the couple whom they adopted the dog from that he was found in the street wondering with his mother and that was all they knew. Initially when brought home he was quiet and shy but within days he became comfortable and began showing signs of aggression.

.

.

Upon evaluating the dog, I guesstimated he was older than previously believed (15 months) with a Veterinarian guessing the same. After the first week, the dog was still shy, easily agitated when corrected and exhibited dog aggression.

.

.

After my evaluation I pressed my client to see if they can get more information and to let the couple know he was much older than they had said. After much pressing, the couple had agreed that they withheld information on the dog and the story given was not all true.

.

.

The couple stated they felt bad that they did not raise the dog properly and that he had gotten out of hand, and simply wanted to find him a better home. They agreed to never properly socializing the dog and didn’t have the means to pay for training. Their idea of socializing was bringing the dog around other dogs to see but he was so aggressive that they just took him home. When they had guest over, the dog would begin to bark and even bit someone that they just put him in a room without ever correcting the behavior.

.
.

This is a classic story of the quote above, both socializing and training go hand and hand but lacking in one department will only lead to failure in all. Getting a dog requires an investment of patience and time with sometimes having to pay for service to help remedy the situation. For those seeking help, there are avenues to explore but you have to do some research in finding help. I personally help my clients giving deep discounts to those that truly don’t have the means and need help and are willing to do the work to get their dogs trained and socialized.

Nobody surely knows when the first collar was …

Nobody surely knows when the first collar was strapped on a dogs neck but I’m of the theory that the bond between dog and human began the day a wolf cub was taken from its mother, a collar was placed and ownership and domestication began.

.
.

Written human history of the Egyptians has shown us that they were the first to introduce the use of collars on their dogs. It is believed that Egyptian royalty used collars for decorative (fashion) and possibly for identification. Dogs for purposes such has hunting and protection would also utilize a type of collar in Egyptian times but it wasn’t until the Ancient Greeks and Romans that purposeful metal, leather and spike collars evolved and collars took a more menacing route.

.
.

It is believed that Greek farmers constructed the first spiked collars as a way of protecting their dogs throats from attacking wolves that targeted livestock and the dogs protecting them. Otherwise known as “wolf collars” these collars were normally made of a metal, usually iron fitted with elongated spikes to protect and stop wolves from attacking a dogs neck while at the same time being used as a weapon.

.
.

The Romans took collars on their dogs a step further as it would identify the role of position and job for a dog. Romans were so devoted to their dogs that Caesar reportedly had to publicly reprimand citizens for paying more attention to their dogs than to their children. Upper class Roman woman didn’t keep dogs as pets but more so as an accessory who wore collars made of jewels and metals.

.
.

Modern dog collars are a reflection of our ancient pass. Although collars aren’t made by metals craftsmen, saddle or shoe makers they still utilize quality materials manufactured by companies that specialize in dog collars. Two of the most common materials are leather and nylon.

I’ve been blessed to have owned and/or trained every dog breed I’ve ever wanted to. The French Mastiff or #doguedebordeaux was one of my favorites breeds to own. I had two (2) males that were athletic as any big dog and also excelled in bite work – Reno and Slob. I’ve yet to see one in 30 years that would actually work as hard as the ones I owned.
.
.

I must add that owning these majestic dog breeds has only helped me better understand the differences of behavior from breed to breed as well as gain an overall knowledge in dealing with each one with the respect that comes with ownership of the different breeds.
.
.

#throwbackthursday share any interesting stories of your dogs, here is mine….
.
.

I noticed bags of dog food would be raided and slobbered by one of the dogs but I couldn’t figure out which would do it since they were all in kennels. One day I looked out the window and noticed Reno popping his gate open, go into the bag of food, eat a few large gulps of dog food then retreat back into his kennel, all the while closing the latch behind him. Smh this guy was too clever for his own self.

Your dog can never be too old or too young to start training (within reason). Same can be said for a person, (again, within reason) Everyone must be involved, if they want their dog to listen.
.
.
Obviously aside from teaching a child RESPONSIBILITY, like having to remember to feed, provide fresh water, and to clean up after their dog. A relationship that develops can be life-changing for a child as they themselves continue to grow and develop.
.
.
When training a dog, I press to my clients how important PATIENCE is to teach their dogs. In turn, dogs teach children patience as a dog can be frustrating. Puppies like to nip and chew, scratch, jump and slobber while getting to children’s toys and destroying them as it’s theirs. Patience teaches children restrain all the while to teach without yelling and/or hitting a dog.
.
.
What I know for sure is that dogs teach children COMPASSION, understanding the feeling of emotions and pain. As dogs have short lives, and a child would more than likely be there for their dogs entire life cycle, a lesson however hard it may be is an invaluable lesson for a child as they comfort their dog and cope with their loss.
.
.
And most importantly how much FUN they will have with their best friend and pet by all the interaction they’ll have throughout their lifetime. From dressing them up, to taking them for walks. Spending time training and playing fetch. Your dog is always their through good and bad days as they’re always there to cheer you up.

Training with me doesn’t always have to be “walking in the middle of a park and making your dog do sit and heel commands” it comes down to learning how to communicate with your pet.
.
.
Anyone who’s worked with me knows that I try to explain every step of the way:
.
.
what your dog is doing
.
.
why he’s doing it
.
.
and what’s he going to do next.
.
.
A more educated client is a better client. A client that knows his dog, how to read his dog and who’s connected with his dog will make a better owner and friend for his pet.
.
.
Those of you who’s trained with me, share with others how you’ve learned about your dog and what I’m talking about down below 👇🏽
