Recently I wrote about spring poles, an exerci…

Recently I wrote about spring poles, an exercise tool listed on the “dog fighting paraphernalia” list. Another tool on the list that is possibly the most important is a “Break Stick”

.
.

A Break-Stick is a wooden or hard plastic stick (pictured above) about 12 inches long (think: broom stick) with one end shaped into a wedge. The shape enables the person to “wedge” the stick into a dogs mouth to “break” and release the bite of a determined Pit Bull or similar bulldog/terrier breed.

.
.

* A quick to how to use: Remember to keep calm. If someone is present to help, each person grab a dog by its collar and straddle over them (if only you, tether a leash to a support like a post or tree and link one of the dogs to it) begin pulling in the opposite direction inserting the wedge end of the stick behind the molars and twist. This action will cause the dog to readjust its bite onto the stick and in turn giving you leverage to pull apart from the fight and regain control.

.
.

Lastly I like to add a “break stick” will not work on most other breeds, due to the way they bite. When other breeds of dog bites, they usually bite in an erratic manner, snapping and often releasing only to bite again. This is the opposite of what a Pit Bull does and exactly why it doesn’t work for other breeds.

.
.

Note: this information is NOT meant to promote dog fighting but to educate and help those that would possibly encounter a situation where this information might be helpful. This information IS meant to prepare one for the usage of breaking an accidental fight and what to do to diffuse it quickly. It should also be noted any potential and present owners of fighting breeds understand the characteristics and history of their respected breeds. Responsibility falls on the owner to be vigilant, to protect and prevent any fights. All owners of “Bull breeds” should know anytime one gets in a fight, you will be blamed even if your dog didn’t start it.
*Due to legal issues, you may use a “plastic tent stake” (swipe next pic) the same manner as a break stick.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeding for extremism is more common than functionality and without function then form will not follow.

.
.

This is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like (slide right to see) it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

The now extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog originate…

The now extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog originated in Córdoba, Argentina. This breed was the predecessor to today’s Dogo Argentino. A main reason the breed vanished and the Dogo remained was its strong aggression toward other dogs. Primarily meant to be a fighting dog, even males and females would rather fight than mate. Although a
capable hunting dog, it hunted in small packs of a male and female, otherwise they were more likely to turn on their pack mates.

There are three basic types of people who fight dogs. .
.

Street fighters: are those who fights are usually unorganized, conducted for money, drugs, or bragging rights. .
.

Hobbyists: are those who fight dogs for supplemental income and entertainment purposes. .
.

Professionals: are those who breed fighting dogs over generations for the sport and pride of their dogs. They are organized and strict in the unwritten rules of the sport. They usually keep to themselves and are normal people living amongst you. .

Note: I’ve been asked several times if I’m a dog fighter. The answer is NO! I do not participate in this world, I’m simply relaying the information for others to know and understand. .

In Kabul, Afghanistan dog fighting is semi-legal. Years ago the Taliban banned the sport and deemed it Haram (sinful, in Islamic terms) but the sport is back and watched by many, as large crowds continue to flock to fights.

.
.

Although it’s seen by many as a cruel and unusual sport, the Police don’t seem to mind it much and in fact tolerate it but they can’t be seen to be encouraging it.

.
.

A possible reason why dog fights have become popular once again in Afghanistan is since fighting dogs are were an important part of their lives and history, when the Taliban enforced their regime over them, they took away many liberties that the Afghans had. So in a way fighting dogs shows the progress from the Taliban years, when so many liberties were banned.

Historical accounts of dog fighting in the US …

Historical accounts of dog fighting in the US can be dated back a hundred or more years before the Civil War began but the betting and spectator sport of dog fighting would take off shortly after the Civil War ended. As immigrants made their way from England and Ireland to start a new life in America, they brought over with them dogs that were already flourishing in an underground fighting world after Bull and Bear baiting became illegal in the 1830’s.

.
.

Many of these dogs would eventually be crossbred to other game terriers to create the ultimate fighter: the American Pit Bull Terrier.
With many professional pits proliferating the America’s in the 1860’s, ironically dog fighting grew and continued to flourish well into the 20th century as a common entertainment with widespread support from the general public as well as elected officials and police officers and firemen with the “Police Gazette” serving as a major source of information into dog fighting for many years thereafter.

.
.

With concerns about the inhumanness of dogfighting most states would eventually outlaw the activity and criminally incriminate those that did not stop. Henry Bergh, founder of the ASPCA, would spearhead this endeavor as he was repulsed by the brutality of the dog fighting he saw in New York and elsewhere. He would revise the states animal cruelty law in 1867 which would make all forms of animal fighting illegal for the first time, including bull, bear, dog and cock fighting.

.
.

The sad but definite truth was the involvement of police officials in dog fighting activity and this was one of the reasons Bergh sought and received authority for the ASPCA at the time to have arrest powers for his own humane law enforcement agents to enforce these tough new laws.
