Education and manners is the human equivalence…

Education and manners is the human equivalence to training and socialization for a dog. Like a person, a dog would benefit greatly when their training and socializing begins at an early age.

.

.

Any trainer would begin imprinting their puppy the minute they bring them home, so why do people wait for their puppy to get older to train? The first year of a dogs life is the equivalent of a human reaching 15 years of age. The basics that every dog should know by the first year is to be socialized so they can be around other dogs, kids and different environments and at least know the basic five words: SIT, STAY, COME, DOWN, HEEL

.

.

A disproportionate number of dogs being turned into shelters are dogs that fall into the category of having too little or no training, nor any proper socialization and this my friends is 100% the owners fault. As a pet owner, do your part to raise a functional member of your family by investing time and in most cases money towards training your dog.

.

.

Most trainers like myself would be open to help others and their dog, do the right thing and seek help as you might be surprised.

Next time you tell your dog to SIT, stop and pay attention to how many times you tell them until they actually do the command and then for the next couple minutes, pay attention to how many times they get up from that sit for you to re-tell them again.

Emotions are sometimes stirred when it comes t…

Emotions are sometimes stirred when it comes to ear cropping. I’ve met people that couldn’t recognize a breed with natural ears or tail. Some think it’s inhumane, while others want the look of cropped ears. Either way its a personal decision.

.

.

If you’re considering having your puppy’s ears cropped, make sure the pup is up to date on shots and be between 9 and 12 weeks old. Be sure to withhold food for 12 hrs before surgery, food can cause vomiting and aspiration (inhaling of vomit)

.

.

You and the Veterinarian will go over the style of crop and surgery will commence. Note, ears bleed easily as they are quite vascular. Once cut and styled the ears are sutured. A couple hours later your pup will be ready to go home and the care begins.

.

.

Ears will bleed for several days. They’ll be painful and itchy as the puppy will attempt to scratch the sutures off. Cleaning the ears is essential to speed recovery and close the wound. Peroxide is usually used for cleaning the scabs that build up as the body is trying to heal the open wound. Once the scabs are cleaned off, an antibiotic ointment prescribed by the vet will speed up the process of healing. Note: a day missed of cleaning can cause scarring.

.

.

Genetics plays a big role and breeds like pit bulls and Schnauzers ears will stand faster than a Great Dane. The cartilage in the ear will thicken as your puppy grows.Taping of the ears will be done once the sutures are out, this process can take a couple of months depending on style and breed of dog. Taping should be done by a professional, as taping too tight you can cause irreversible problems and too loose will never stand correctly. If the tape comes off prematurely, take your dog in within a day to be taped again. The longer they’re off, the longer it will take to stand. If left off too long, they may never stand correctly.

.

.

After a few weeks of diligence the outcome should be what you expect, perfectly standing ears.

Summer time is upon us, the weather is warming up and most of us at some point will be by some body of water. As much as we should look after our children’s safety, we too must keep an eye on our pets.

.

.

Their is a general belief that dogs can swim, that doggy paddling is something that they inherently know to do but this is not all true.

.

.

Certain breeds are simply not equipped for swimming, but they’re always exceptions to the rule. Here is a partial list of breeds that aren’t strong swimmers.

A common question I get “WHAT METHOD DO YOU USE FOR YOUR TRAINING?”

.

.

I don’t really like this question, some trainers actually believe that the methods they were taught is the only method available to train a dog and that they should only be trained with those methods.

.

.

My rebuttal is “If you train ten (10) dogs the same way nine (9) dogs wouldn’t be trained right” Every dog is different, every breed is different, male versus a female (difference) age someone begins training, owners having different ideas of how to raise their puppy, and of course personalities with a few other exceptions.

.

.

When we look at it that way, a trainer must adjust and adapt to each dog and do what’s best and responsible to attain the best results, and that’s definitely not using one method that a trainer knows but various methods to get there.

Dog Mange, microscopic mites that burrow under…

Dog Mange, microscopic mites that burrow under skin. Two types: Demodectic and Sarcoptic Mange (also called dog scabies)
Demodetic Mange is usually kept under control due to a healthy and strong immune syste in mature dogs. Younger dogs and older dogs with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable.

.

.

In some cases puppies can acquire mites through their mother during pregnancy. Usually a puppy will heal itself as their immune system matures but when clinical signs appears and infestation spreads, seek veterinarian care.

.

.

Sarcoptic Mange (contagious to humans) is the other type that needs more attention. They appear as small red hairless bumps with pimples, thickness of skin and puss. Scaling around the eyes, mouth and front legs is also common. When a dog is infected with this type it’s skin is extremely itchy and hardened.

.

.

In some cases, a dog will scratch so much that a skin scrape will be ordered (where a piece of skin is scratched off to analyze under a microscope) but find that dog might not have any mites since they’ve scratched them away only to leave behind itchy toxins. Since the diagnosis for demodectic and sarcoptic mange is based on the type of mite that is found (cigar shaped are demodectic and round shaped are sarcoptic) skin scraping will not always be as accurate and in most cases owners will simply treat for mange only to see if there is a reduction in symptoms.

.

.

If you have more than one dog at home, all should be treated. Also, mites can jump to humans so wash up after handling any pets with symptoms. Sleeping and common areas should be disinfected to avoid re-infestation. Wash all of your pets belongings with detergent and hot water.

.

.

After care is essential to help keep mange from reappearing, dry irritated skin condition can be restored with a Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplement for your dogs skin. Proper diet, heavily meat based would also help build immunity and a healthy skin and coat.

Meet the Briard of France, its origins date as…

Meet the Briard of France, its origins date as far back as the 8th century. Used as a livestock guardian to defend against wild animals and from poachers, the Briard were later utilized as a herding dog.

.

.

The first Briard standard was created in 1897 by a group of dedicated fanciers. In 1909 the association Les Amis du Briard was created and although it broke up during the first World War, it was reformed in 1923. The standards created by this club were adopted by the Briard Club of America (started in 1928)
Although the breed has a lengthy history in the states it’s yet to catch on in popularity in the states.

.

.

Some historians credit the third president Thomas Jefferson as the person who first imported the breed from France. Others believe that the French Aristocrat, Marquis de Lafayette first brought the breed to the states while working in creating trade agreements with Thomas Jefferson in the West Indies. However they got here, in 1922 a fancier by the name of Barbara Danielson registered the first litter of Briard puppies with the American Kennel Club, and by 1928 the AKC officially recognized the breed.

.

.

Today, the Briard remains among the most popular of the herding breeds in France. Its fellow cousins, the Beauceron and Barbet, which were used to correct the breed to its present day standard gets more notoriety

.

.

Thinking you’ve never seen this breed before, think again:
*Buck from “Married with children”
*Ruff from “Dennis the Menace”
*Sam the sheepdog from “Looney tunes cartoons were all Briards
*The inspiration for Chewbacca of “Star Wars” was from George Lucas dog Indiana

Living in the moment, easy to say, hard to do …

Living in the moment, easy to say, hard to do but not for a dog. A dog senses time different versus humans as they live in the moment, without thoughts of the past or future. Brooding about our past or future can take away from our happiness, something a dog will not suffer from.

.

.

Although dogs remember people, lessons learned (commands) and impactful events such as the death of a family member (dogs and humans) they’re resilient and will eventually find their rhythm and be back living in the moment.

.

.

Living in the moment like our pets can help us enjoy life more fully as we shouldn’t impede our chances of being happy by fretting about the past or worrying about a future that has yet to happen. Like our dogs, we would be better off if we were to learn to engage in this practice of living in the moment.

From a trainers point of view, we see things that a client doesn’t. What you’re witnessing here is a 5 month old puppy walking with its owner and myself giving out the commands as to when to turn and to stop all the while never stopping.

.

.

From my standpoint I’m directing my client to counter correct the dog as she’s walking with her. Most people stop and wouldn’t know what to do in this instance as the puppy is being rambunctious as well as annoying (trying to bite the leash) but any good trainer would identify what’s going on and make the dog work through it.

.

.

Tip of the day: if you do the opposite of what your dog wants to do in a walk, you’ll correct the walk without realizing it. Take for instance, if they want to walk fast, slow down. If they pull right, go left.
