FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeding for extremism is more common than functionality and without function then form will not follow.

.
.

This is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like (slide right to see) it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

What does Empathy and dogs have in common? One…

What does Empathy and dogs have in common? One way that we care and communicate with our dogs is by showing them empathy. Empathy is defined as an ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Being that we can understand what their needs are after raising them, interacting with them and knowing what makes them tick its easier to understand this.

.
.

Think about these examples, during fireworks you comfort them. When duty calls in the middle of the night, you take them out. You play with them when they’re feeling playful. Examples like this show us that we are willing to put them ahead of ourselves and not think anything different about it. It’s no wonder why the perspective of dogs towards humans is so clear to them.

.

.

What we don’t often think about is how we can be so selfless to our dogs but not so to others. We all need to think how much our dogs impact us just as much as we impact them and use it for our betterment. Practicing empathy is something all of our dogs expect from us, and it is also something we should all expect from each other more often.

What does the Akita Breed and Helen Keller have in common?

.
.

For those that don’t know who Helen Adams Keller was, she’s an American author, political activist, and lecturer who so happened to be blind and deaf due to an illness at a young age. She was also a huge dog lover!

.
.

In 1937 Ms. Keller began an extended speaking tour which took her through much of Japan. The Japanese people were taken by her and her story of overcoming her personal handicaps. Having heard of the story of Hachikō – the Akita who mourned for his owner by visiting the train station everyday for 10 years after his death and her fondness of dogs, she decided to visit the Akita district.

.
.

During her visit, she met several Akita dogs and was impressed by them and mentioned that she might like to have one of these “faithful dogs” for herself. The Japanese government took this request to heart and made sure she went back to the states with an Akita puppy for herself. The dog was named Kamikaze-Go.

.
.

Keller bonded with “Kami” during the 16 day boat trip home as she felt connected with her and the dog. When they reached US shores, newspapers were proclaiming that Keller had introduced the breed to America. Kami’s life would be a short one, as he died of distemper before the age of eight months.

.
.

Hearing of the dogs death, the Japanese government was saddened and wanted to make sure to fulfill her request to own an Akita dog as a companion. They sent her another dog several months later. A full brother (same Sire and Dam) named Kenzan-Go but issues and concerns about the dog actually making it to US soil began and held up the dog because of deteriorating relations between Japan and the US. However the dog finally did make it over and the picture above is of the dog and Ms. Keller herself.

.
.

In part Ms Keller and her frequent positive mentions throughout her dogs life, this would contribute to the Akita becoming a popular dog in the states.

Is the Akita really a fighting dog? The breeds…

Is the Akita really a fighting dog? The breeds original purpose was to hunt Bear and Deer but even that is loosely based. It was tried at some point in its early history as a dog fighter but only for a short time with the city of Ōdate being given credit as to where the idea was conceived.

.
.

But the more I research, I find the breed wasn’t fully involved in the sport of dog fighting as it’s history has lead us to believe. First off, dog fighting was outlawed and other breeds like the Tosa Inu proved to be a more able fighter indirectly causing the Akita to gradually lose popularity.

.
.

Concerned by the breeds’ potential extinction, in 1919 the Japanese included the large spitz type dog by then called the Akita after a prefecture in Northern Japan. It was not until 1931 after searching isolated villages that the Akita, many of whom resembled crossbred dogs from its informal fighting past were used to bring the breed back. Luckily in their search enough other dogs that resembled the current idea of a purebred Akita were found and were the stating block of the rebuild you see today.

.
.

Now Akita dogs did manage their way into Europe where dog fighting was already in place and introducing a new dog in those days was a premium. From this juncture the stories/history of its fighting abilities is where it could possibly stem from.

The egg-shaped head is not a product of evolut…

The egg-shaped head is not a product of evolution as some believe, but actually man-made, a modern product of many years of selective breeding. Mr. James Hink’s, the father of the Bull terrier wanted a leggier dog, full of stamina and better breathing. I don’t think he’d be happy with the dog today.

.
.

Bull terriers born in the early 1900’s had a head type that would be considered suicide to a breeding program by today’s standards. In a strange way the head type is still evolving towards an even more EGG or “Extreme” head type. If one does research, they’ll find that over the decades beginning in the 50’s changes in head type with how AKC has pushed its narrative for this extreme head has come into play and has change towards the more EGG shape.

.
.

Do you think today people buy a dog like that? I’d believe they would if no one ever saw the EGG shape but that has changed the game.

.
.

Something else to keep in mind, dogs of that era were very good dogs and winning in the show ring without the EGG shaped head present, this is a snippet of the standard that AKC is pushing on todays head type.

.
.

Head – The head should be long, strong and deep, right to the end of the muzzle, but not coarse.  VIEWED FROM THE FRONT IT SHOULD BE EGG-SHAPED AND COMPLETELY FILLED, its surface being free from hollows or indentations.  The top of the skull should be almost flat from ear to ear.  The profile should curve gently downwards from the top of the skull to the tip of the nose, which should be black and bent downwards at the tip.  The nostrils should be well developed.  The under-jaw should be strong.
