The calm before the storm….
.

Stella (4 month old) is the forth (4th) dog I’ve trained for this client. Already started foundation bite work, obedience and of course she’s housebroken while we waited for her ears to heal. We’re 2 months into training…..
.

It all comes down to setting a plan and following through.

Team work: a principal point when it comes to …

Team work: a principal point when it comes to a dog and his owner. The human is the point and the dog is the partner. When I first met Ozzie after evaluating him I realized what his issues were. I was surprised at how much better than I initially thought his obedience was but there was a bigger issues looming. He had been through several other trainers before coming to me and so I was bemused to see that they didn’t identify it either.
.
.

The issue I noticed was that Ozzie and his owner wasn’t a cohesive team which is one of the key principals to dog training. I’ll explain and give an example. What is an AUTOMATIC SIT? When walking with your dog and when you come to a STOP, your dog should automatically SIT on every stop!
.
.

Here’s the thing, when in a walk you stop 10 times and your dog only comes to a sit on 5 of those occasions and the other 5 times he doesn’t sit but you don’t correct timely or at all, what your dog will not be doing is an AUTOMATIC SIT. When you’re not consistent and connected with your dog, listening and following through is not what he’s going to do. It’s as if Ozzie is a gambler and is willing to gamble the odds of his owner correcting him on every time he doesn’t SIT on a stop.
.
.

So back to Ozzie, I’m working with his owner to understand and READ her dog better as well as to be consistent on every call she does with him. Because of this, she’s improved tenfold in getting better and more confident with him.
.
.

Here he is doing off leash work, we’ll call him VELCRO dog….. @ozzietheshepherd

whч dσgs hσwl?
.
.

Howling is a normal behavior, sharing with it’s ancestral background of the wolf.
.
.

A dog will commonly howl when the persistent sounds of a siren is heard.
Howling will also occur when a dog is feeling territorial or stressed out. More than likely a dog would howl to alert to other dogs that they’re getting close to their territory or signal them to leave. I’ve witnessed dogs howling after a few minutes of their owners leaving, it’s like their saying “come back home already”
.
.

In the end maybe your dog likes to hear themselves howl, just as some of us like singing in the shower 🚿

Why wouldn’t someone want a smart dog? T…

Why wouldn’t someone want a smart dog? They’ll learn faster and will be trained quicker. Although there is truth to this, they’re is something most haven’t thought about when it comes to their SMART dog. When training begins and education evolves, the SMART dog will begin to see what they can and can’t get away with, always overthinking and trying to out smart you. They begin to seek short cuts and take more chances. I find that most dog owners don’t see the signs and allow behaviors to manifest where other issues will come about. They’ll recollect to themselves and make statements as such “he was SIT, STAYING correctly last week and now he’s not”
.
.

It is at this point that the SMART dogs owner will simply write it off as “my dog so SMART that he’s STUBBORN” where I’ll respond with, no fool aren’t you beginning to see the “SMART” dog might just be challenging you? It’s not that we don’t want a SMART dog, if you begin to see how my theory is theorizing then you’ll begin to see that the SMART dog is more work on both the owner and trainer to deal with. In the end what we really want is a dog that will learn to follow directions and commands.
.
.

Let’s steer this SMART DOG issue into today’s perspective where dogs are much like an only child in a family unit. Our pets have learned to take advantage of their owners and of situations making its owners, enablers. They’ve out SMARTED people while people have gotten gullible. Humans have open up their homes and allowed dogs the same freedoms and privileges that their humans counterparts share and SMART dogs have fully taken advantage of it, they’re SMART aren’t they?

Jumping is a common complaint when it comes to…

Jumping is a common complaint when it comes to dog ownership. When you come home from a long day of work, your dog incessantly jumps happy to see you or god forbid you’re all dressed up to go to a party and your dog jumps on you and now your wardrobe and possibly night is ruined. Let alone having company over and your dog doesn’t know how to act and begins jumping on them the minute they walk in and you wonder how all this began.
.
.

What’s funny is that it could have all been resolved when your dog was a puppy and you played a major role in perpetuating the behavior and didn’t know it. When your dog was a puppy and he came to greet you, he jumped on your leg and you began petting and playing with him unintentionally cultivating this behavior and with every praise it you reinforced what would eventually become a nuisance.
.
.

Now that we’ve identify where you went wrong and for those new puppy owners reading this firstly don’t allow your puppy to jump on you. Instead, teach the puppy to sit before being petted. Continue to reinforce the SIT command every time you greet your puppy. After some time, he’ll understand in order to get praised or your attention, he must sit first. Continue with the same plan when he greets anyone else, family members, friends and strangers always making sure that he SITS before he is acknowledged. Before you know it, he’ll get the hang of it and it will become second nature to SIT instead of jumping when you come home.

Training with me doesn’t always have to …

Training with me doesn’t always have to be “walking in the middle of a park and making your dog do sit and heel commands” it comes down to learning how to communicate with your pet.
.
.

Anyone who’s worked with me knows that I try to explain every step of the way:
.
.

what your dog is doing
.
.

why he’s doing it
.
.

and what’s he going to do next.
.
.

A more educated client is a better client. A client that knows his dog, how to read his dog and who’s connected with his dog will make a better owner and friend for his pet.
.
.

Those of you who’s trained with me, share with others how you’ve learned about your dog and what I’m talking about down below 👇🏽

Your dog can never be too old or too young to start training (within reason). Same can be said for a person, (again, within reason) Everyone must be involved, if they want their dog to listen.
.
.

Obviously aside from teaching a child RESPONSIBILITY, like having to remember to feed, provide fresh water, and to clean up after their dog. A relationship that develops can be life-changing for a child as they themselves continue to grow and develop.
.
.

When training a dog, I press to my clients how important PATIENCE is to teach their dogs. In turn, dogs teach children patience as a dog can be frustrating. Puppies like to nip and chew, scratch, jump and slobber while getting to children’s toys and destroying them as it’s theirs. Patience teaches children restrain all the while to teach without yelling and/or hitting a dog.
.
.

What I know for sure is that dogs teach children COMPASSION, understanding the feeling of emotions and pain.  As dogs have short lives, and a child would more than likely be there for their dogs entire life cycle, a lesson however hard it may be is an invaluable lesson for a child as they comfort their dog and cope with their loss.
.
.

And most importantly how much FUN they will have with their best friend and pet by all the interaction they’ll have throughout their lifetime. From dressing them up, to taking them for walks. Spending time training and playing fetch. Your dog is always their through good and bad days as they’re always there to cheer you up.

When working in agitation training it’s …

When working in agitation training it’s important to follow directions. An agitator is putting himself in a situation that can be dangerous if precautions are not taken and of course following directions.
.
.

At the same time, a bad decoy (agitator) can physically and mentally ruin your dog if they’re not experienced enough in working with dogs and/or misreads the dog. Broken teeth, legs and neck have happened out on the field and will continue to if precautions and directions aren’t followed.
.
.

Now go ahead and watch the video and see how fast things can go wrong when directions are not followed.
