My new installment to #dogsandpeople series in…

My new installment to #dogsandpeople series introduces you to @ozzietheshepherd Ozzie’s been through several trainers in his 3 years, all having different ideas, methods and approach in training through his aggression issues.

.

.

Ozzie came from a litter of working and show dogs. Audrey (Oz’s human companion) took a video of her picking from the litter and after reviewing the video she began seeing some behavior and temperament issues and phoned the breeder to see if she can exchange with the other available male whom she thought would be a better fit. The breeder assured her she had made the right choice, stating “all her dogs are good” This is where I tell you, “a breeder will tell you everything you want to hear, to make a sale”

.

.

Throughout Ozzie’s formative months, behavioral and aggression issues kept a stream of trainers (6) shuffling in/out of their lives. The first trainer said Oz was a liability and she should return him to the breeder. At 7 months old, Audrey was faced with returning Oz again but changed her mind again. Audrey enrolled Oz with a 3rd trainer who had a boot camp and while there notified her of a potential buyer for him. Searching for guidance on the right choice, Audrey began to pray and randomly opened her bible to this passage (slide to the right) “I started crying because in my heart I believed this was my sign, and I trusted the good lord” From that day she stuck it out.

.

.

Audrey feels that Ozzie came into her life for a reason and has no regrets of all the work and stress that they’ve been through. “I believe things come into our lives for a reason to learn from or make us stronger to change our ways” says Audrey. “I have learned to be patient and calm because of Ozzie, if you knew me before Ozzie” Personally knowing Oz and hopefully being his last trainer, he is a loyal loving family dog with only a few dog issues but which dog is perfect.

It’s not the word that a dog begins to understand, but the actual sound of the word attributed to the language being spoken. After hearing the word/sound “sit” many times, a dog will eventually associate it with the behavior.

.

.

An average dog identifies 150 or so words/sounds by association, with some dogs learning 250 or more. A Border Collie named Chaser takes the cake, it was reported that he knew the distinct names of 1022 objects including 800 different dog toys.

.

.

In multi-cultural homes, dogs are becoming multi-linguistic. Learning an object such as “ball” can be said in different languages yielding the same result.

Excellent post from @CaodeTrabalho that I found and wanted to share with you all. The caption was in Brazilian so I didn’t repost the words and I mean no disrespect.

The video shows a well trained, patient dog that is being tested and ran through a “real world situation” As a trainer that has worked and created scenarios like this, it was well executed and the dog is fully engaged in his job.

.

.

This is a great example of how a dog can protect you and your family.

One of the worst thing you can instill in a child is FEAR. Fear of dogs, reptiles, animals in general. Fear of not being good enough, strong enough or loved enough.

.

.

Growing up in the inner city I witnessed for myself how a phobia of dogs were instilled in children. I had no fear of animals, let alone dogs and knew I would raise my kids to be the same way.

Here’s a small sample of my youngest children “living their best life” when it comes to hanging with dad, dogs and reptiles…..

Considered a rare breed outside of France, the…

Considered a rare breed outside of France, the Beauceron is the largest of the French sheepdogs. An old breed developed solely in France with no known foreign crosses, the Beauceron was selectively bred to drive and protect the herd (sheep and cattle) and for guard work.

.

Originating in the surrounding regions of Paris known as La Beauce, the first mention of the breed was written in 1587. Mr. Abe Rosier, a priest wrote an article in 1809 about the French herding dogs describing the differences in type between the Berger de la Beauce (Beauceron) and the Berger de la Brie (Briard) a closely related long-haired cousin.

.

The Society Central Canine, was founded in 1881 to sponsor dog shows in France as The Kennel Club was doing in England, registering in the Livres Origines Francais (LOF) the first ‘Berger de Beauce’ in September 1893.

.

Toward the end of the 1800s, M. Paul Mégnin began to define the standard of the breed differentiating between the Shepherd of the Brie and the Shepherd of Beauce. In 1922, the Club des Amis du Beauceron was formed under the guidance of the respected M. Paul Megnin.

.

With concerns of modern day life and the disappearance of flock in the countryside, in the 1960s the Ministry for Agriculture required that the S.C.C. create a confirmation examination with the goal of preserving the qualities of this ancient sheepdog with the fear that the Beauceron could well disappear. Fortunately, the versatility of the Beauceron such as protecting the home and family, as a herding dog as well as a military and police dog, has helped it to thrive in its native France, much like the German Shepherd of Germany.

.

Today the Beauceron is also known as Berger de Beauce (Shepherd of the Beauce) or Bas Rouge (Red Stockings) having changed very little in the past 100 years.

Being it’s Veterans Day, I salute the men and women that has and still serve our country. Being a dog trainer I want to also thank our dogs of past and present for their services as well.

.

.

So to tell this story about the medical center laboratories of the Veterans Administration who we find to be embroiled in a controversy involving the mistreatment of canines shouldn’t be the day but it’s important for all to know.

.

.

I read news reports last week that found the VA continuing to conduct invasive experiments on dogs as part of its medical research program, resulting in the euthanasia of the animals. According to these reports, experiments at four VA facilities, including in Milwaukee, where researchers are removing parts of the dogs’ brains to test neurons that control breathing prior to killing them by lethal injection, and in Cleveland, where doctors are measuring dogs’ cough reflexes by placing electrodes on their spinal cords. When done, the cords are severed, killing the dogs.

.

.

It is important in the name of science for testing and experiments to be done and the VA is not alone in using dogs in the name of scientific research. Im not totally against the practice as it’s critical to medical breakthroughs, but to simply mistreat the animals as collateral isn’t a cool thing.

.

.

On this Veterans Day weekend let’s think of the men and women as well as the dogs that serve our country and bring some attention to this matter urging the VA medical staff to change their approach and better care of the dogs through positive prevention studies designed to keep animals and people healthy, and advocating in any work it funds that no animals are harmed, there is no induction of illness or injury, and they are not euthanized.

The same way a smile from a human is a simple …

The same way a smile from a human is a simple means of communication a wagging tail of a dog is their way of notifying intentions. A common myth is a dogs wagging tail, denotes a happy and friendly signal. Indeed a tail that is wagging is usually a sign of friendliness, it can also mean other things such as an insecurity or fear.

.

.

First let’s ask this question, do dogs wag their tails when no one is watching or when there is no stimulation? Sure they do, much like facial expressions you’d make thinking of thoughts or seeing objects that triggers a memory. A dog will do the same but with a different wag.

.

.

Wags are a way of communicating with one another as well as with us. Sort of a (body) language with vocabularies and grammar injected here and there. Positions and movement make up the load of how dogs address each other and humans. A dog will focus on the way a dog carries (moves) its tail
as their more keen to its movements and places it sets its tail. Breeds like the Beagle which carry their tails straight up and stiff also tend to have a white tip helping other dogs identify better.

.

.

A tale of a tail’s position; where a dog carries its tail can tell you where your dogs is emotionally. A dog carrying its tail mid height suggests he’s relaxed. A tail held horizontally, and a dog is usually attentive and alert. A vertical tail is a dominant signal. On the other end, a tail that lowers is a sign of becoming submissive with a tucked tail under its body identifying a sign of fear.
