FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeding for extremism is more common than functionality and without function then form will not follow.

.
.

This is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like (slide right to see) it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

Obedience training should be fun and to the point. Yesterday’s lesson consisted of working Zulu and Dräco together for the first time. After weeks of individual workouts and conditioning of new deportments I was able to put two (2) clients dogs, both 6months old to work together.

With over 900 years of fighting in its pedigre…

With over 900 years of fighting in its pedigree, the Tosa we see today began looking nothing like it does today. The breed had a humbling beginning resembling an Akita style dog (spitz type with a curled tail). In the 19th and 20th century with the introduction of Mastiff, Bulldogs, Bull Terrier, Great Dane and Saint Bernard from Westerners to name a few shaped the breed to its present type.

.
.

Japanese Tosa fights are unlike other dog fights as the rules are the same as Sumo Wrestling. Dogs are expected to stay silent throughout the match with growls, barks and whimpers frowned upon leading to disqualification. The object in Japanese dog fights is to not harm the other dog but to dominate the opponent and pin them down, with any noticeable wounds ending the fight, again similar to Sumo wrestling. This is a reason many Sumo wrestlers are attendance in fights to watch and learn new moves from the dogs.

.
.

What may sound weird to the Western world, isn’t to the Japanese as dog fighting a family outing for some. No permits or licenses are required to fight dogs, so there’s no official record of how many fights happen each year. Their are associations like the East Japan Dog Fighting Association which holds eight or nine tournaments per year, fighting between 60 and 100 dogs in a small tournaments with larger tournaments numbering as high as 250. In Katsurahama beach in the Kōchi Prefecture of Japan one can find the Tosa fighting dog museum.

The smallest mammal, the bumblebee bat, is tho…

The smallest mammal, the bumblebee bat, is thought to live 5 to 10 years, while the largest mammal the blue whale, lives for 80 to 90 years. This seems to be the exact opposite when it comes to dogs, another mammal species.

.

Larger dogs age at an accelerated pace, where they grow and gain weight to almost its full size by the time their a year old. Yes a small dog would mature at the same rate but the stress on the body (weight) at around 100 fold from birth to young adult in a Mastiff as compared to 10 fold in a Yorkie is a huge difference between large and smaller breeds

.
.

Larger dogs are also more prone to health issues like developmental disorders, musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal diseases, and tumors—all of which are also linked to their accelerated growth and appear to be the nasty side effects of selective breeding for large size over a short period of time.

The Swiss Confederation controlled the German …

The Swiss Confederation controlled the German city of Rottweil from 1463 to 1803, and the herding dog now known as the Rottweiler derived from tri-colored Swiss dogs that were also used to create the St. Bernard. You can say that the Rottweiler is more related to the St. Bernard than it would be to any other German breed. (Boxer, Dobe, Great Dane)

.
.

The myth that a Brandy barrel was carried on a St. Bernard’s neck is false. The monks of the St. Bernard Hospice deny that any St. Bernard has ever carried casks or small barrels around their necks; they attribute the image to an 1820 painting by Edwin Landseer, where an Alpine Mastiffs Reanimated a Distressed Traveler (which became a popular engraving in 1831 by Charles Landseer).

.
.

The name “St. Bernard" was not in widespread use until the middle of the 19th century. “Saint Dogs”, “Noble Steeds”, “Alpenmastiff”, or “Barry Dogs” we’re common names before that time with Barry dogs being given for the famous St. Bernard who was credited with saving more than 40 lives during his lifetime.

.
.

St. Bernard dogs are no longer used for Alpine rescues with the last recorded instance of a rescue in 1955.

The Cane Corso (pronounced kah-neh kor-so [ˈka…

The Cane Corso (pronounced kah-neh kor-so [ˈkaːne ˈkɔrso]) also known as the Dogo di Puglia (Dog of Puglia) Italian Mastiff, is a large Italian breed of dog, for years valued highly in Italy as a companion, guard dog, and hunter.

.
.

History tells us that the breed is a Coursing (Hunting) dog, bred to hunt game in the wild. Nobility would have owned and hunted with a dog like this. The Great Dane being a large type dog is the other known Mastiff type dog that was used for a similar purpose.

.
.

Here is where the storyline changes. The Corso and Great Dane you see today could not possibly do the same job that it’s predecessor once did. The Dane was more like a Greyhound in those days, a svelte athletic dog while the Corso would have shared a similar look and body. Keep in mind the average Corso before coming into the states were 80 to 90lbs.

.
.

Next pictures are of a Cane Corso and German Mastiff (Great Dane) and what they used to look like. Note the size and physical look of the dogs opposed to what we know of today

Scooby Doo and Marmaduke are both Great Danes,…

Scooby Doo and Marmaduke are both Great Danes, but are they really?
.
.

The name “Great Dane” was given by the French naturalist Comte de Buffon. History tells us during his travels in Denmark, he came upon a breed and saw a big but lightly built Boar Hound (early Dane like dogs) which resembled a Greyhound and remarked that “the Danish climate had caused the Greyhound to become the Grand Danois (Great Dane)” shortly thereafter the dogs became known as the Great Danish Dog err Great Dane.
.
.

The real Great Dane is the Broholmer, a true big Mastiff type dog from Denmark. A large yet agile dog with some weighing upwards to 150lbs. The breed is very rare outside of Denmark with only about 1200 totaling the world and 250 outside of its native country.
.
.

Broholmer’s were once hugely popular in Denmark and was well-known for its versatility. The Broholmer was a prized possession, used by Danish nobility as a guard dog and as a hunting dog of large animals (deer, boar, etc) as well as by farmers as a farmhand who would assist in the handling of uncooperative pigs and bulls. The breed were highly respected that Broholmers were often given as a gift by royalty and aristocrats to their peers in Europe.
.
.

A generally mild tempered and a highly social dog, the breed may seem intimidating but a conscious effort has been placed by the few dedicated breeders in its community to produce a calmer, gentler animal than what was once need many years ago.
.
.

In the early 1500s, King Frederick II posed for a painting with the breed, while in the 1700s, King Frederick VII and Countess Danner owned several Broholmers (many of which they gave the same name: Tyrk). This link to the monarchy has guaranteed the breed as a whole a very regal standing in history.
.
.

So for those discriminating few that want something very few people outside Europe owns, check out the Broholmer.
