The Cane Corso (pronounced kah-neh kor-so [ˈka…

The Cane Corso (pronounced kah-neh kor-so [ˈkaːne ˈkɔrso]) also known as the Dogo di Puglia (Dog of Puglia) Italian Mastiff, is a large Italian breed of dog, for years valued highly in Italy as a companion, guard dog, and hunter.

.
.

History tells us that the breed is a Coursing (Hunting) dog, bred to hunt game in the wild. Nobility would have owned and hunted with a dog like this. The Great Dane being a large type dog is the other known Mastiff type dog that was used for a similar purpose.

.
.

Here is where the storyline changes. The Corso and Great Dane you see today could not possibly do the same job that it’s predecessor once did. The Dane was more like a Greyhound in those days, a svelte athletic dog while the Corso would have shared a similar look and body. Keep in mind the average Corso before coming into the states were 80 to 90lbs.

Next pictures are of a Cane Corso and German Mastiff (Great Dane) and what they used to look like. Note the size and physical look of the dogs opposed to what we know of today

This breed is considered the last Coursing Mastiff of recent times. Although an old breed in its native country, it has become popular rather quickly around the world, especially the States.

.
.

For bonus points, in the picture this dog exhibits a key physical feature that is telling of the time the dog comes from and it’s purpose on the field. Can anyone guess?

Anytime the Mastiff and Molosser dogs are spoken about, this is the breed that everyone thinks about. But is it really the true Molosser that every Mastiff breed we know of today came from?

To create this mastiff two (2) breeds of dogs were crossed but not in the 50/50% sense, more in a 60% to 40% split.

.
.

Note: the crossing of the two breeds could be the simplest breeding idea that man has ever committed to and one which each breed greatly contributed to the creation of the breed.

Although considered a “Mastiff” by many, I personally disagree. I will explain in a near future post as to my stance and why.

Dogs and children both share a similarity that exposes the fakes in people. Dogs in particular have a knack of sizing people up and knowing when you’re a good person, and will show respect towards you.

.
.

This possibly goes back to the first time wild dogs were domesticated to help mankind. They earned the trust of the people and ended up being mankind’s best friend since. This evolvement and intuition has never been broken and today a dog is one of the last true “Lie Detectors” (aside from liquor 🍺😂)

On Memorial Day, we remember Americans who served in all the branches of the military. With all respect to those that have passed in order to protect our freedom, their has been tens of thousands of dogs that have served and passed for that same purpose.

Brief History of Military Dogs.
.
.

On March 13, 1942, Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson authorized to officially induct dogs into the war effort. Initially 30 breeds were accepted but were narrowed down to just five: German Shepherds, Belgian Sheep Dogs, Doberman Pinschers, Farm Collies and Giant Schnauzers.
.
.

In August 1942, the first War Dog Reception and Training Center was established at Front Royal, Virginia. Initially thought that only 200 dogs would be needed but that estimate changed as requirements increased.
.
.

Early on, the military had no training program set up so numerous qualified civilian dog trainers volunteered their time and service (without pay) Also note that the supply of dogs came from a majority of family owned homes from all 48 states to support the War effort.
.
.

In the fall of 1942, a K-9 Quartermaster Corps training center was established at Fort Robinson, Nebraska since the program proved to successful. At this point, thousand of dogs were trained for war duty. Dogs were also trained to guard facilities, carry messages, sniff out mines, and pull sleds. The Quartermaster Corps trained the dog handlers, most of whom were quartermaster soldiers. A technical manual was designed in July 1943: TM 10-396, War Dogs, which contained the doctrine for training and deployment.
.
.

Dogs were trained rather quickly as training time was normally eight to 12 weeks with basic fundamental commands as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and others. During this training dogs also were introduced to muzzles, gas masks, gunfire and riding in vehicles. If the dogs passed the basic training routines, they were transferred to one of four specialized training programs where they underwent months of rigorous military training. The four classes consisted of sentry dogs, scout or patrol dogs, messenger dogs and mine dogs.

This #mastiff popularity in England came to an abrupt end when the Kennel Club put in place their anti-cropping rule. The breed suffered greatly with the onset of World War I and II, to the point of almost being extinct. Historians tell us that Adolf Hitler ordered that the breed be killed on sight because of their guarding devotion to their families. At that time in Europe, only three breeding pairs were left after World War II.

Name the breed….

In my next posts, I will be doing a more thorough write up about this breed and it’s interesting history.
