Next time people think they’re just dogs, remember they’re also family. Dogs are part of our world, life, our moral fabric. Even at the top levels of our government, a dog made a difference in someone’s life. So important that they gave him his chance to pay his last respects.

Did you know that a child in the Boy or Girl Scouts can earn a badge for dog care, well they can. A badge of merit for pet care has been around since the early 1900’s and has evolved from First Aid to Animals to Veterinary Medicine as well as Pet Care.

The Teakettler is a legendary creature from American folklore with origins in lumberjack culture, specifically the lumber camps of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is said to resemble a small stubby legged dog with the ears of a cat. Its name comes from the sound it makes, which is akin to that of a boiling tea kettle. It only walks backwards, and steam issues from its mouth as it makes its whistle. As the myth goes, only a few lumberjacks have seen one, as they are very shy, but if a boiling kettle is heard and nowhere to be found, it is sure that a Teakettler is nearby.

History has a weird way of repeating itself. The Extreme, Exotics and Micro style Bully dogs are a product of trying to produce a dog smaller and more extreme than the norm.

.

.

This has already happened in dog history, and I’m sure it will happen again. Take a look at the picture and can anyone tell me what breed went through it before the Pit Bull?

REPOST
.
.

I posted this over (3) years ago regarding the observation of Columbus Day. Update: is the change of name and celebration to Indigenous Day. Quick story of the other side of History and to commemorate and remember the indigenous people that lived in this country before us.

.
.

In the early years of Columbus’ conquest’s very little is talked about his hands in the massacre of the many indigenous people who’s body parts were found in butcher shops throughout the Caribbean, chopped up to be sold as dog food.

.

.

During this period, a practice known as the “Montería Infernal” translation; “Infernal Chase” (manhunts) in which enslaved Indians that had escaped or those that were released were hunted for fun by War dogs as a sport to appease those in charge.
.
.

Dogs were protected by armor vest and spiked collars to protect against weapons that could be used against them. To add insult to injury, the flesh of humans were fed to incite the dogs and in some cases in front of horrified parents their babies were fed to punish the people.
.
.

This is a gruesome side of how dogs served a purpose in history and what little was taught to us in schools about the day that we’ve been indoctrinated to celebrate with admiration when we we’re children.

In a meticulous account kept by Pilgrim Edward Winslow about the first permanent non-native settlement of people is where the recording of a Mastiff and Spaniel were among those that sailed with the first settlers. Winslow left no records of the dogs names.
It is safe to say that the Mastiff was an Old English type and the Spaniel was a English Springer Spaniel type since their voyage began from England.

.

.

A 25 year old Pilgrim named John Goodman was their human companion. He was an important gentlemen as he was one of the men who signed the Mayflower Compact, the document which established the rules by which the settlers would live in the settlements.

In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, English artisans fled to France looking for work bringing along with them little bull-dogs. These Bull-dogs would grow in popularity and eventually become the French Bulldog.

.

.

Known for their “Bat” ears, early in its history Frenchies had a “Rose” styled ear (think an English Bulldog) Wanting the breed to look more distinctive, breeders in America decided that BAT ears should be the standard.

.

.

A little known fact but of crucial influences was the popularity of the breed with “belles de nuit” (prostitutes). The ladies of the night are credited to first call them “Bouledogues Francais,” or French bulldogs. The name caught on quickly and spread from there.

.

.

The majority of Frenchie’s are bred through Artificial Insemination (AI) Due to their bulbous proportions, natural breeding almost never happens in modern days. Male dogs have a hard time due to risk of overheating and exhaustion. At the same time, the majority of females cannot perform natural births. C-sections is almost always performed due to possible complications. This has contributed to the higher prices of French Bulldog puppies today.

.

.

Flying with a Frenchie can potentially be an issue depending on your dog. Due to their smushed facial structure, breathing can be a problem. Couple with stress and pressure changes in a plane, only adds to the problem.

An old Middle Age tale is of a murder of a French gentlemen named Sir Aubry de Montdidier. His dog, a dog of which the description is very similar to that of a Briard took it upon himself to relentlessly pursue the assassin, with such intense focus, howling and barking all the while that observers couldn’t help but notice. Once word of Aubry’s death spread, suspicions fell on a man named Macaire. With the dog being the only witness to the crime, The King ordained that a judiciary duel (trial by combat) should take place between man and dog. Macaire, armed with a cudgel (short thick stick) lost to the dog and confessed to the murder and was duly hanged. This strange conflict was fought out in 1371 on the Isle de Notre Dame.

.

A vivid sculpture of the event, “Chien d’Montargis”, sculpted by Gustave Debrie in 1870 now stands in the garden of l’Hotel Durzy in Montargis

Considered a rare breed outside of France, the Beauceron is the largest of the French sheepdogs. An old breed developed solely in France with no known foreign crosses, the Beauceron was selectively bred to drive and protect the herd (sheep and cattle) and for guard work.

.

Originating in the surrounding regions of Paris known as La Beauce, the first mention of the breed was written in 1587. Mr. Abe Rosier, a priest wrote an article in 1809 about the French herding dogs describing the differences in type between the Berger de la Beauce (Beauceron) and the Berger de la Brie (Briard) a closely related long-haired cousin.

.

The Society Central Canine, was founded in 1881 to sponsor dog shows in France as The Kennel Club was doing in England, registering in the Livres Origines Francais (LOF) the first ‘Berger de Beauce’ in September 1893.

.

Toward the end of the 1800s, M. Paul Mégnin began to define the standard of the breed differentiating between the Shepherd of the Brie and the Shepherd of Beauce. In 1922, the Club des Amis du Beauceron was formed under the guidance of the respected M. Paul Megnin.

.

With concerns of modern day life and the disappearance of flock in the countryside, in the 1960s the Ministry for Agriculture required that the S.C.C. create a confirmation examination with the goal of preserving the qualities of this ancient sheepdog with the fear that the Beauceron could well disappear. Fortunately, the versatility of the Beauceron such as protecting the home and family, as a herding dog as well as a military and police dog, has helped it to thrive in its native France, much like the German Shepherd of Germany.

.

Today the Beauceron is also known as Berger de Beauce (Shepherd of the Beauce) or Bas Rouge (Red Stockings) having changed very little in the past 100 years.
