Nobody surely knows when the first collar was …

Nobody surely knows when the first collar was strapped on a dogs neck but I’m of the theory that the bond between dog and human began the day a wolf cub was taken from its mother, a collar was placed and ownership and domestication began.

.
.

Written human history of the Egyptians has shown us that they were the first to introduce the use of collars on their dogs. It is believed that Egyptian royalty used collars for decorative (fashion) and possibly for identification. Dogs for purposes such has hunting and protection would also utilize a type of collar in Egyptian times but it wasn’t until the Ancient Greeks and Romans that purposeful metal, leather and spike collars evolved and collars took a more menacing route.

.
.

It is believed that Greek farmers constructed the first spiked collars as a way of protecting their dogs throats from attacking wolves that targeted livestock and the dogs protecting them. Otherwise known as “wolf collars” these collars were normally made of a metal, usually iron fitted with elongated spikes to protect and stop wolves from attacking a dogs neck while at the same time being used as a weapon.

.
.

The Romans took collars on their dogs a step further as it would identify the role of position and job for a dog. Romans were so devoted to their dogs that Caesar reportedly had to publicly reprimand citizens for paying more attention to their dogs than to their children. Upper class Roman woman didn’t keep dogs as pets but more so as an accessory who wore collars made of jewels and metals.

.
.

Modern dog collars are a reflection of our ancient pass. Although collars aren’t made by metals craftsmen, saddle or shoe makers they still utilize quality materials manufactured by companies that specialize in dog collars. Two of the most common materials are leather and nylon.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeding for extremism is more common than functionality and without function then form will not follow.

.
.

This is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like (slide right to see) it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

What is a Cynologist, someone asked after reading my bio. At first I thought to ignore the question as maybe they’ll look up the definition themselves but then I remembered, what if their millennial’s?

.
.

Cynology is the study of matters related to canines and/or domestic dogs. To be exact, it is a term used to denote a serious zoological approach to the study of dogs by writers on canine subjects, dog breeders, trainers and enthusiasts who informally study dogs.

.
.

One thing I enjoy doing is educating myself and others about dogs, their purpose and history. So being a self imposed Cynologist, it allows me to enjoy both while giving myself a moniker.

Finally we get to mankind’s most perfect creation of the brutal sport we called dog fighting. The APBT, American Pit Bull Terrier.

.
.

It’s history is simple, if you’ve read any of my last post you’d understand how the breed was brought to this country by immigrants of Europe and perfected in the states for what it has become to be known for.

.

Pictured is Crenshaw’s Ch. Honeybunch, not only a winner in the (pit) but possibly the best producing dog of all time. The epitome of both worlds from a continuity stand point and ideals set forth from the community of dog men of the era before and after.

Pit Bulls were on the cover of Life Magazine (3x) more than any other dog

.

Sallie, a Pit Bull stood guard over dead and wounded Union soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg. She is immortalized in a Civil War monument in Pennsylvania.

.
.

Petey, the dog from The Little Rascals, was a Pit Bull. He was a game-bred dog that was casted to work with children. The dog is remembered all these years later as a fantastic pet.

.
.

Of the 51 dogs seized from Michael Vick’s dog-fighting ring in 2007, over 40 of them have been rehabilitated and gone on to loving homes. Four of them have even become therapy dogs.

.
.

Here is my problem with the above but true statement, if these dogs were truly “fighting dogs” technically the majority of the dogs wouldn’t have been able to be re-home. My opinion…. what you think?

The scars on this dogs face shows what he’s been through. This is what a dog fighting dog looks like, for those that question it. If a dog doesn’t have the scars to show for it then I doubt it’s a fighting dog and the person is making up stories…

Again I’m not a dog fighter, I’m only sharing and educating people of dogs and what to look for.

I’ve been asked to post about the Blue Paul Terrier and what it looked like. It was clearly one of the first of the bull and terrier crosses that I’ve written about in previous postings and most likely bred from the original bulldogs and game terriers, possibly in Scotland where some of it’s written history places it.

.
.

As with the history of old fighting dogs, an infusions of other similar dogs such as the Old English White Terrier, Old Bulldogge and Bull and terrier dogs that were brought from England and Ireland crossbred to produce dogs we see today.

.
.

Written history of what is known of the breed was that it was very popular in Scotland in the mid 19th century, but it progressively lost popularity and is believed to have become extinct in the early 20th century. It is believed that by the mid-19th century, the breed was among the first fighting dogs to arrive in the United States with British immigrants, along with the bull and terrier.

.
.

The Blue Paul Terrier’s origins are disputed as many of these dogs weren’t properly documented in that era. One story of the Blue Paul Terrier’s origins is that John Paul Jones brought them from abroad and when he visited his native town of Kirkcudbright around 1770, gypsies around the Kirkintilloch district kept Blue Paul Terriers for dog fighting, and claimed the dogs came from the Galloway coast. A possible likely story is a British military officer posted to the Glasgow area brought with him an Irish Blue Terrier bitch from the Earl of Kerry’s kennels, when he was reposted he left his bitch with friends who bred her with a white bull and terrier of the Duke of Hamilton’s breeding to create the breed.

The truth is they’re no written documents claiming the breed to be extinct, but the breed in its pure form of the 1800’s for sure is not around.

.
.

Therefore it could be said and somewhat believed the breed has been bred with other breeds, mainly bulldogs and Terriers so often that they simply blended into today’s dogs as their physical appearance can be seen throughout the Bull breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

The now extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog originate…

The now extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog originated in Córdoba, Argentina. This breed was the predecessor to today’s Dogo Argentino. A main reason the breed vanished and the Dogo remained was its strong aggression toward other dogs. Primarily meant to be a fighting dog, even males and females would rather fight than mate. Although a
capable hunting dog, it hunted in small packs of a male and female, otherwise they were more likely to turn on their pack mates.

Yes you read that right, in 2008 every state finally made it a felony to fight dogs in their respective states.

.

As of 2008, dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In most states, the possession of dogs for the purpose of fighting is also a felony offense.

.
.

Being a spectator at a dogfight is illegal in all states except Montana and Hawaii. Both of those states need to step it up.
