When you look at the picture, what do you see?…

When you look at the picture, what do you see? A man that’s in shape, fit, muscular, skinny/thin/lithe as opposed to not FAT and athletic.
.
.

This is the idea of what a man that’s in shape would look like. SWIPE TO THE LEFT and we’re back at the picture that brought this post on. I’ve noticed comments on how the dog is too SKINNY but in reality that’s what a dog that is in it’s optimal workout shape should look like. An athlete.
.
.

Again, I’d like for those viewing this post to swipe left again and see what a dog that is too SKINNY looks like and know the difference. Emaciated and peak conditioning are two distinctly different physical forms.
.
.

In the end it comes to perception, you might perceive that the dog in the second picture is too skinny but the reality that’s what’s called “conditioned weight” so if you think it’s skinny, heck yeah he’s skinny but it’s a dog low on body fat and high in muscularity.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeders are breeding for extremism more so than functionality and without function then form will not follow.
.
.

In my opinion, this is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like, it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

Let’s face it, we can all be inconsistent in areas of our lives. So when it comes to training your dog I can see how one can be lazy. You hired a dog trainer to TRAIN your dog but you must understand that in order to get your dog to work for you, you must also put in work and be CONSISTENT with how you handle your dog.
.
.

There is one thing if the person doesn’t earn the respect of his dog and expects the dog to do what he’s been taught, it’s another when they know how to handle their dogs but are too inconsistent with caring about their dogs behavior in one situation and not in another.
.
.

Inconsistency in dog training can lead to future behavior problems when there is none. Dogs basically understand RIGHT or WRONG, the BLACK and WHITE of things.
.
.

Look at it this way, if 9 out of 10 times you keep your dog from jumping on you, but on that 10th time you relent, it is that moment that your dog feels like he won and succeeded. That my friends is what keeps DOGS CONSISTENTLY trying. The point is you’re the superior animal here, don’t allow the dog to get his way. Try to be more consistent in what you trained for, what you want and what you expect. Your dog will thank you for it in the end.

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves, as a child someone taught us to brush our teeth,
to be respectful and say “thank you”, to drive a car those simple things that sometimes we take for granted, play a role in our lives today.
.
.

It is no different for our dogs. We can’t expect them to understand what a SIT command is or to remember go outside and poop when it’s time if it’s never taught to them.
.
.

Dogs need to be taught everything that is expected of them. If you want your dog to be calm and respectful, then you must teach them so. If you want a great obedient dog then you must teach them to be.
.
.

Consistency and structure will help lead your dog to becoming a part of your family unit. Ignoring either will only set you back and continue to perpetuate behavioral issues.

Ask yourself this question, how do you get your dog off leash…

Ask yourself this question, how do you get your dog off leash trained when for the first few weeks of the training class that you’ve enrolled in, spent weeks on sit, stay, come, down & heel (on a six foot leash) You then have this false sense of security and let your dog off the leash and he acts a fool, as he’s never been to a park nor has had weeks of training beforehand.
.
.
As you begin training towards off leash work, firstly you must make the decision that you’re going to go forward with the work to achieve off leash status and commit to it. While leash training is the foundation to achieving “off leash” in lots of ways it hinders most handlers as most people often and inadvertently use physical cues to control the dog while applying slight pressure on the leash to help the dog know what they want.
.
.
Every dog is different and the approach or as some may call (method) has to be adjusted to each but keeping it “simple, stupid” is the best approach. Start in your backyard just you and your dog using a ball, toy or food to motivate and keep his attention and as he gets used to going through a repertoire of off-leash skills move training inside where they’re is more going on for him to want to wander and play with. Continue the same approach as you did outdoors to keep him motivated and focused on you and as he gets more reliable working off leash, find a fenced in field to continue his growth in off leash work.
.
.
Sounds pretty easy right, but you have to remember two big and important components to achieving ultimate freedom. One is always I incorporate into all your daily activities off leash work even when you’re not doing structured training. Secondly build the best relationship you can with your pet where they always want to be with you and always give huge rewards for your dogs good behavior anytime you play, walk, feed, or just hang out. Blending these ideas along with training will take you a long way and can help finally achieve the off leash status you want.

There is overwhelming evidence that people who lead active lifestyles and are dog owners as well will less likely suffer from illness and more likely live longer.
.
.

In the dog world, exercising is viewed as a way to get a dog tired more than for their health sakes. As healthiness is important, keep in mind that dogs that exercise less run the risk of developing health issues with obesity, heart disease and arthritis to name a few.
.
.

What many dog owners don’t realize is that dogs that have little ways to exert their energy (exercise) can and will develop various behavioral issues. Lack of exercise and (freedom – indirectly) can result in boredom and frustration, developing into destructive patterns of behavior such as barking, aggression, digging or destroying of property.
.
.

This is what Cesar Milan’s preached all along, exercising leading to a better behaved dog. Their is truth in exercising helping to a better dog but only if it’s incorporated with proper training and every day “life skills routine”
.
.
Overall it is important to incorporate some type of exercise routine at least twice a week and routinely work on obedience patterns that a trainer has taught you if you went through any professional training. If you didn’t go the trainer route, many dog training books will have breakdowns of lessons to work on. On my next posting I will offer a few clients (in the LA area) a personal obedience pattern and exercise routine to help with their dogs, stay tuned.
