There’s lesson(s) to be learned if we’d only be “more like dogs”

.

.

Dogs don’t judge nor do they criticize, loyalty isn’t just a hashtag and they’re always happy to see you. Material things are something to chew on, they’re always down for whatever is going on. A dog will always take the initiative when it comes to spilled food, are amazing listeners and unlike people they’ll decrease your blood pressure.

Education and manners is the human equivalence…

Education and manners is the human equivalence to training and socialization for a dog. Like a person, a dog would benefit greatly when their training and socializing begins at an early age.

.

.

Any trainer would begin imprinting their puppy the minute they bring them home, so why do people wait for their puppy to get older to train? The first year of a dogs life is the equivalent of a human reaching 15 years of age. The basics that every dog should know by the first year is to be socialized so they can be around other dogs, kids and different environments and at least know the basic five words: SIT, STAY, COME, DOWN, HEEL

.

.

A disproportionate number of dogs being turned into shelters are dogs that fall into the category of having too little or no training, nor any proper socialization and this my friends is 100% the owners fault. As a pet owner, do your part to raise a functional member of your family by investing time and in most cases money towards training your dog.

.

.

Most trainers like myself would be open to help others and their dog, do the right thing and seek help as you might be surprised.

As a dog trainer, I pick up on things that the normal person doesn’t.

Next time you tell your dog to SIT, stop and pay attention to how many times you tell them until they actually do the command and then for the next couple minutes, pay attention to how many times they get up from that sit for you to re-tell them again.

Living in the moment, easy to say, hard to do …

Living in the moment, easy to say, hard to do but not for a dog. A dog senses time different versus humans as they live in the moment, without thoughts of the past or future. Brooding about our past or future can take away from our happiness, something a dog will not suffer from.

.

.

Although dogs remember people, lessons learned (commands) and impactful events such as the death of a family member (dogs and humans) they’re resilient and will eventually find their rhythm and be back living in the moment.

.

.

Living in the moment like our pets can help us enjoy life more fully as we shouldn’t impede our chances of being happy by fretting about the past or worrying about a future that has yet to happen. Like our dogs, we would be better off if we were to learn to engage in this practice of living in the moment.

4 facts you probably didn’t “nose” about

.

A dog’s nose has two functions—one for smell and one for respiration, basically they have the ability to separate air where a portion goes to the olfactory sensing area (which distinguishes scents), while the other goes to breathing.

.

Humans can either breathe in or out but a dog has the ability to take in air and breathe out air at the same time. This commonly happens when sniffing as a dogs nose is designed so air can move in and out at the same time creating a continuous circulation of air enhancing their olfactory sensors.

.

Dogs sense smell separately with each nostril. Lets break it down this way, when we see our eyes compile two slightly different views of the world, then our brain combines them to form a a whole picture. Whereas a dog’s brain uses the different odor profiles from each nostril to determine exactly where an object is around them.

.

Some breeds of dogs can smell up to 100,000 times better than a human. It is so sensitive that [dogs can] detect the equivalent of a ½ a teaspoon of sugar in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

February 18th is Presidents’ Day, so it’s only appropriate to talk about past Presidents and their dogs.

.

Records from a pharmacy in Springfield, Illinois in 1855 shows the purchase of de-worming medication under the name “Fido” by Mr Abraham Lincoln. Fido was known around town and had many admirers. He often accompanied Mr Lincoln on his walks about town.

.

“Fido,” by all accounts was probably a yellow lab mix, that Mr Lincoln decided not to take with him to the White House after he was inaugurated for presidency. Fido was left in the care of family friend Mr John Eddy Roll during this time.

.

Sadly a year after the tragic event of Lincoln’s assassination, Fido would meet tragedy as well. In 1954, Johnny Roll himself told Time Magazine: “We possessed the dog for a number of years until one day the dog, in a playful manner, put his dirty paws upon a drunken man sitting on the street curbing [who] in his drunken rage, thrust a knife into the body of poor old Fido…So Fido, just a poor yellow dog, met the same fate as his illustrious master – assassination.”

.

Today the name “Fido” is very popular for dogs, based on Lincoln’s beloved pet. So if you ever wondered how the name Fido became so popular, look no further. . It is almost as though Fido himself remains just as memorable in the dog world as Lincoln was throughout history. Today a few photographs survive of the dog and his owner.

The inspiration for this post was from someone asking me about my thoughts of dogs sleeping outside when it rains.

.

Dogs can suffer from exposure – to rain, sun, cold, heat, etc. very much the same way people can. If a dog is primarily an outside dog, then it would make sense to provide a proper shelter such as a kennel or dog house for it protect from the elements.

.

Not only is it cruel to keep a dog confined without proper shelter, it’s also illegal. The cost of a dog house will be cheaper than the fine you may face or the jail time if reported.

.

Lastly I’ve owned dogs that clearly are outside dogs and love playing in the water clearly not minding the rain but in the end it is important to keep your dog sheltered, warm and dry free from the elements.

If humans can eat out of a can, why can’t a do…

If humans can eat out of a can, why can’t a dog. In 1922 Ken-L Ration became the first commercial canned dog food in the United States. Made mainly of horse meat, disclosed in small letters at the bottom of the package and carefully marketed as a “lean, red meat”

.

By the 1940’s horses were intentionally bred for canned dog food which was so successful that 50,000 horses per year were being slaughtered.

.

During World War II canned foods were rationed and pet food was classified as a “non-essential,” These imposed rations and pushback from animal lovers, furious about the number of horses being killed for the production of dog food created an opportunity to introduce a new product in the pet food industry. Enter dry kibble.
