I’ve been blessed to have owned and/or trained every dog breed I’ve ever wanted to. The French Mastiff or #doguedebordeaux was one of my favorites breeds to own. I had two (2) males that were athletic as any big dog and also excelled in bite work – Reno and Slob. I’ve yet to see one in 30 years that would actually work as hard as the ones I owned.
.
.

I must add that owning these majestic dog breeds has only helped me better understand the differences of behavior from breed to breed as well as gain an overall knowledge in dealing with each one with the respect that comes with ownership of the different breeds.
.
.

#throwbackthursday share any interesting stories of your dogs, here is mine….
.
.

I noticed bags of dog food would be raided and slobbered by one of the dogs but I couldn’t figure out which would do it since they were all in kennels. One day I looked out the window and noticed Reno popping his gate open, go into the bag of food, eat a few large gulps of dog food then retreat back into his kennel, all the while closing the latch behind him. Smh this guy was too clever for his own self.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century princi…

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION is a 20th-century principle which says that an object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
.
.

This is important to note as many breeds today don’t follow this principle. In fact breeding for extremism is more common than functionality and without function then form will not follow.

.
.

This is what an ENGLISH MASTIFF should look like. The perfect balance of front to back to height, even weight distribution throughout its frame and the overall structure is impeccable on this dog. It should be noted that he’s not as wrinkled, sloppy or overly massive, as today’s dogs. Take note how alert he appears and gives the appearance of a dog with endless amounts of energy.
.
.

This picture was likely taken sometime in the early 1900’s and if you know what today’s MASTIFF looks like (slide right to see) it’s a different breed we are comparing. Over a short amount of time a more extreme version has been promoted versus the dog pictured.
.
.

So why don’t dogs follow the same pattern as before? The reason is the purpose of many breeds isn’t coveted as it once was and breeders breed for the show ring to compete in conformation rather than any workability and functionality. Add to the fact that breed clubs and parent registry AKC, the American Kennel Club pushes for dogs to look or exceed conformation standards that promote extremisms.
.
.

In your own opinion did modern breeding practices improve today’s dogs or make them impractical physically?

If your dog could speak, he’d call you his fri…

If your dog could speak, he’d call you his friend, cause he wouldn’t think of you as an owner and say “he feeds me, walks me, bathes me and is always telling me how good I am” Your dog would consider you to be the most giving person. To humans, it may seem superficial but to a dog it is everything. Without the rearing of human contact your dog would probably not live a fulfilled life. To an extent, they know it which is why they’re so loyal.

.

.

The beauty of this is humans would do all the above with the best of their abilities and expect nothing in return with no motives, thoughts of monetary returns and the all too common “I did this for you what you going to do for me” ideals. Of course we want our dogs to be obedient and social when guest come over but overall most people just want a buddy to hang with.

.

.

The quote “Be the person your dog thinks you are” should really be re-examined and thought through. Like I stated above about how people would do all for their dogs with no return wanted, if only we can be like so amongst each other in this world, caring for each other, helping one another, doing for all without any motives or wanting anything in return.

Obedience training should be fun and to the point. Yesterday’s lesson consisted of working Zulu and Dräco together for the first time. After weeks of individual workouts and conditioning of new deportments I was able to put two (2) clients dogs, both 6months old to work together.

The scars on this dogs face shows what he’s been through. This is what a dog fighting dog looks like, for those that question it. If a dog doesn’t have the scars to show for it then I doubt it’s a fighting dog and the person is making up stories…

.
.

Again I’m not a dog fighter, I’m only sharing and educating people of dogs and what to look for.

With over 900 years of fighting in its pedigre…

With over 900 years of fighting in its pedigree, the Tosa we see today began looking nothing like it does today. The breed had a humbling beginning resembling an Akita style dog (spitz type with a curled tail). In the 19th and 20th century with the introduction of Mastiff, Bulldogs, Bull Terrier, Great Dane and Saint Bernard from Westerners to name a few shaped the breed to its present type.

.
.

Japanese Tosa fights are unlike other dog fights as the rules are the same as Sumo Wrestling. Dogs are expected to stay silent throughout the match with growls, barks and whimpers frowned upon leading to disqualification. The object in Japanese dog fights is to not harm the other dog but to dominate the opponent and pin them down, with any noticeable wounds ending the fight, again similar to Sumo wrestling. This is a reason many Sumo wrestlers are attendance in fights to watch and learn new moves from the dogs.

.
.

What may sound weird to the Western world, isn’t to the Japanese as dog fighting a family outing for some. No permits or licenses are required to fight dogs, so there’s no official record of how many fights happen each year. Their are associations like the East Japan Dog Fighting Association which holds eight or nine tournaments per year, fighting between 60 and 100 dogs in a small tournaments with larger tournaments numbering as high as 250. In Katsurahama beach in the Kōchi Prefecture of Japan one can find the Tosa fighting dog museum.

If one was to ask dog-men about the Presa Cana…

If one was to ask dog-men about the Presa Canario as a dog fighter, many will tell you the breed doesn’t hold much weight in their world, with the APBT (Pit Bull) still being their choice. The Presa was bred to be a big game hunting, cattle dog and family/property protector but unfortunately the breeds extreme physical prowess thrusted the breed onto that world.

.
.

On the small Island off the coast of Spain, fights were the amusement of the simple, common country folk and people from the marginal areas of the cities. Presa’s were important for a time because people “pitted” them for prize and/or ego.

.
.

Historical information hints that there existed dog fighting on the Canary island but it wasn’t as numerous as one may believe. Many whom owned the breed barely had enough money to feed themselves, let alone an animal this large. Usually fights were agreed upon, rules were placed and dogs were brought out to dole it out. No spectator could touch or bother the dogs while in combat. The most widespread method was to place the dogs within a circle marked on the ground, face to face. The fight began when the collars were removed. Keep in mind that these were not organized public events, emerging sporadically at the challenge of rival owners. However, fights became mini spectacles and practically the whole neighborhood participated once it became aware of a fight.

.
.

Dog fighting was banned in the mid-1940s but lasted for another decade where it remained common practice in all of the island. Due to tightening by the Francoist (Franco regime) authority for the eradication of dogfighting, the Presa Canario was relegated to coveted breeders that up-kept the breed in its “as- purist” form while preventing its total disappearance from history as many of the dogs of the time were crossed with English Bulldog, German Bulldog (Boxer) and native dogs like the Perro Majorero.

Given the name “The Beast of the East” the Bul…

Given the name “The Beast of the East” the Bully Kutta could be the next formidable fighting dog in a culture that although shunned by the general public worldwide, still thrives in the underground and in the case of the Bully Kutta, in open sporting events in Pakistan.

.
.

The breeds origin is still under scrutiny as the different regions considered its own dog. Pakistan has laid claim as well as India, in the Punjab region where the dog is considered a pure descendant from the Mesopotamian war dogs. While others believe that the breed is a mixture of dogs that intermixed when the British laid claim to India and Bulldogs, Bull terriers as well as Mastiff’s were brought over intermixing with Bully Kutta’s to create the dog we see today.

.

.

Today the dog is a mixture of culture combined with hype and myth where dog fighting is an open spectacle and a youth movement towards the breed is open heartily embracing the size and superiority of this dog over all other fighting dogs to fuel ego and machismo in today’s internet world.
