My new installment to #dogsandpeople series in…

My new installment to #dogsandpeople series introduces you to @ozzietheshepherd Ozzie’s been through several trainers in his 3 years, all having different ideas, methods and approach in training through his aggression issues.

.

.

Ozzie came from a litter of working and show dogs. Audrey (Oz’s human companion) took a video of her picking from the litter and after reviewing the video she began seeing some behavior and temperament issues and phoned the breeder to see if she can exchange with the other available male whom she thought would be a better fit. The breeder assured her she had made the right choice, stating “all her dogs are good” This is where I tell you, “a breeder will tell you everything you want to hear, to make a sale”

.

.

Throughout Ozzie’s formative months, behavioral and aggression issues kept a stream of trainers (6) shuffling in/out of their lives. The first trainer said Oz was a liability and she should return him to the breeder. At 7 months old, Audrey was faced with returning Oz again but changed her mind again. Audrey enrolled Oz with a 3rd trainer who had a boot camp and while there notified her of a potential buyer for him. Searching for guidance on the right choice, Audrey began to pray and randomly opened her bible to this passage (slide to the right) “I started crying because in my heart I believed this was my sign, and I trusted the good lord” From that day she stuck it out.

.

.

Audrey feels that Ozzie came into her life for a reason and has no regrets of all the work and stress that they’ve been through. “I believe things come into our lives for a reason to learn from or make us stronger to change our ways” says Audrey. “I have learned to be patient and calm because of Ozzie, if you knew me before Ozzie” Personally knowing Oz and hopefully being his last trainer, he is a loyal loving family dog with only a few dog issues but which dog is perfect.

REPOST
.
.

I posted this over (3) years ago regarding the observation of Columbus Day. Update: is the change of name and celebration to Indigenous Day. Quick story of the other side of History and to commemorate and remember the indigenous people that lived in this country before us.

.
.

In the early years of Columbus’ conquest’s very little is talked about his hands in the massacre of the many indigenous people who’s body parts were found in butcher shops throughout the Caribbean, chopped up to be sold as dog food.

.

.

During this period, a practice known as the “Montería Infernal” translation; “Infernal Chase” (manhunts) in which enslaved Indians that had escaped or those that were released were hunted for fun by War dogs as a sport to appease those in charge.
.
.

Dogs were protected by armor vest and spiked collars to protect against weapons that could be used against them. To add insult to injury, the flesh of humans were fed to incite the dogs and in some cases in front of horrified parents their babies were fed to punish the people.
.
.

This is a gruesome side of how dogs served a purpose in history and what little was taught to us in schools about the day that we’ve been indoctrinated to celebrate with admiration when we we’re children.

Is aggression a learned behavior or genetics? …

Is aggression a learned behavior or genetics? In humans, studies have determined that aggression is a learned behavior but what about in dogs?

.

.

Many dog behaviorist believe that aggression is a taught behavior from us to them, that dogs aren’t born that way, they’re raised to be so. Here’s their argument: a puppy growls at another dog, people would often overlook and say “he’s a puppy” and without thinking PRAISE the behavior and from that point on, aggression is instantaneously OK’d in a dogs mind.

.

.

This is often called an Operant behavior, aggressive behavior is Operant behavior. Operant: a behavior that is initially spontaneous, rather than a response to a stimulus, consequences reinforces the recurrence of that behavior.

.

.

Although this is how dog aggression begins I lean with the theory that genetics plays more of a role that behaviorist want to believe. Dog fighting breeds genetically will show aggression towards other dogs whether or not someone is perpetuating it, in the end it comes down to the individual dog.

.

.

What are your thoughts, is your dog too aggressive to be around people and other dogs?

In a meticulous account kept by Pilgrim Edward Winslow about the first permanent non-native settlement of people is where the recording of a Mastiff and Spaniel were among those that sailed with the first settlers. Winslow left no records of the dogs names.
It is safe to say that the Mastiff was an Old English type and the Spaniel was a English Springer Spaniel type since their voyage began from England.

.

.

A 25 year old Pilgrim named John Goodman was their human companion. He was an important gentlemen as he was one of the men who signed the Mayflower Compact, the document which established the rules by which the settlers would live in the settlements.

Being it’s Veterans Day, I salute the men and …

Being it’s Veterans Day, I salute the men and women that has and still serve our country. Being a dog trainer I want to also thank our dogs of past and present for their services as well.

.

.

So to tell this story about the medical center laboratories of the Veterans Administration who we find to be embroiled in a controversy involving the mistreatment of canines shouldn’t be the day but it’s important for all to know.

.

.

I read news reports last week that found the VA continuing to conduct invasive experiments on dogs as part of its medical research program, resulting in the euthanasia of the animals. According to these reports, experiments at four VA facilities, including in Milwaukee, where researchers are removing parts of the dogs’ brains to test neurons that control breathing prior to killing them by lethal injection, and in Cleveland, where doctors are measuring dogs’ cough reflexes by placing electrodes on their spinal cords. When done, the cords are severed, killing the dogs.

.

.

It is important in the name of science for testing and experiments to be done and the VA is not alone in using dogs in the name of scientific research. Im not totally against the practice as it’s critical to medical breakthroughs, but to simply mistreat the animals as collateral isn’t a cool thing.

.

.

On this Veterans Day weekend let’s think of the men and women as well as the dogs that serve our country and bring some attention to this matter urging the VA medical staff to change their approach and better care of the dogs through positive prevention studies designed to keep animals and people healthy, and advocating in any work it funds that no animals are harmed, there is no induction of illness or injury, and they are not euthanized.

A dog can bring protection to your family and property but what most don’t know is that they’re dogs are generally a false sense of security.

.

.

“If your dog hasn’t seen it, you don’t know how they’ll react” is a statement I’ve said over my career, time and time again. Even the most prolific guard dog, if not taught to do the work will more than likely not up show when you most need them.

.

.

This video is of a dog that is beginning to be taught “real world” challenges in the event of a break-in or encounter of a bad guy.

.

.

If you’d like to test your dog, DM me with your info.

@dieselthebeauceron is growing, swipe left and see how heavy he is at 1 year old. Beauceron, Berger de Beauce or however you might want to call them are big Shepherd type dogs of France.

.

.

Many mistake them for a cross between a Rottweiler and German Shepherd but obviously they’re not and is considered an old breed by today’s standards. Hey Diesel, I know you want me to come down ASAP, I’m calling your Hoomen tomorrow to nail down a date this month! I will repost a write up on the breed on my next posting for those that want to learn more about the breed.
