I often speak of how dogs of my mothers generation and dogs today are so different. Why is this so?

.

.

Humans have changed, simple as that. Dogs are no longer just pets, they’re family. People used to say they couldn’t own a dog until they got a backyard only because that was where the dog would live and sleep. Today, that excuse doesn’t stop anyone from getting a Mastiff and living in a studio.

.

.

Separation anxiety is at an all time high today, dogs are given every imaginable way of keeping busy and then the owner leaves for work and dogs are bored out of their mind doing destructive things to get attention. Dogs 30 years ago barely got any attention other than a bowl of food and water for the day, get a bath every other month and taken for a walk afterwards where the owner sees how undisciplined their dogs are to be put back in the yard for the next few months again.

.

.

I’ll make more points in future posts of how different dogs of past generations are to today. Chime in and share your thoughts of this post.

A coyote in the Echo Park area (Northwest of Downtown Los Angeles) was videoed with what appears to be a large dog toy, possibly a Kong toy stuck in its mouth obstructing it from eating or drinking. Residents and Animal control is looking to capture the coyote to help free it from the toy.

.

.

People have mixed feelings when it comes to coyotes as the numbers of small dogs and cats missing continue to rise with blame placed on them the majority of the time. We have to think of them differently and take most of the responsibility of what is going on.

.

.

WE’VE taken over their habitat, leave trash cans out for days, let our dogs and cats out unattended but continue to blame the coyote. The hypocrisy of humans. We are the top of the food chain so we must help them too. Enough of my rant, oh wait one more thing…. this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a dog get his mouth stuck on a Kong toy. Possibly a better design?

Have you ever heard of “Scratch Reflex”

.

Dogs shake or kick their legs when you scratch them because it activates nerves under their skin that are connected to their spinal cord and relays a message to their leg muscles to kick in an attempt to get rid of the irritant.

.

Maybe you want to rethink of scratching them the next time you find it funny. 🤷🏻‍♂️

There’s lesson(s) to be learned if we’d only be “more like dogs”

.

.

Dogs don’t judge nor do they criticize, loyalty isn’t just a hashtag and they’re always happy to see you. Material things are something to chew on, they’re always down for whatever is going on. A dog will always take the initiative when it comes to spilled food, are amazing listeners and unlike people they’ll decrease your blood pressure.

𝐋ike humans, dogs are social animals and work best in packs. Packs succeed because members of the group depend on one another to survive.

.

.

𝐎ur brains works much like a dogs in that we need each other as much as they need us. We are committed and devoted to those that show us the same, coming from the heart and not because they have to.

.

.

𝐘OLO is an acronym for “You only live once” this mentality will not take you far in a pack. The pack behavior is a survival mechanism of sorts, dogs keep their packs small and workable. We too should learn from this

.

.

𝘼nimal experts believe a pack mentality is a huge reason dogs are loyal to us, being committed and devoted to the team.

.

.

𝐋ead your dog, lead your pack and you’ll be viewed as the head or “Alpha” and if they view you as the head they’ll respect and follow your lead. Dogs don’t just love a good cuddle, they know loyalty will keep them alive. It’s funny how being loyal to those that care can make a difference in your life.

I don’t know the year this picture was taken b…

I don’t know the year this picture was taken but it caught my attention. It’s safe to say early 1900’s? What’s important to note is that this picture was most likely taken during a time that some of the greatest fighting dogs that lived were around, bred by “bulldoggers” that kept to themselves and hardly would have dealt with anyone from the public.

.

.

What is known about “old timers” is they hardly bred nor studded their dogs for money, nor did they sell to the general public. They shared or traded dogs with each other since to them this was a competition of sorts, a sport where dogs were the players that they loved and respected, the same way we cherish our pets today.

.

.

I know this may sound foreign to those that view “dog fighting” as cruel and inhumane but it was a part of history, American Pit Bull terrier history that is today a marker of the breed. I’m in no way perpetuating dog fighting, but relaying to the reader that at one time this breed held the respect of everyone from politicians to presidents to celebrities and the general public.

.

.

What has changed are the people who own the breed and the media circus whom perpetuates a despise of them. I’d rather not use cliches but make things clear for those that don’t understand, “educate yourself before your discriminate”

.

.

With all that said, this picture features several dogs with handlers holding them side by side and obviously the dogs are not bothered by the presence of the other dog. I may catch some flak for this post but I don’t care, it’s how I feel and love and respect the breed through good and bad times.

This is the Bulldog of today and to many this …

This is the Bulldog of today and to many this is the breed that hunted wild hogs, baited bears and bulls and fought dogs. Laughable as today it can barely walk half a mile and is coughing up a lung. To be fair the breed has changed to this more for show and money than anything else but who’s to blame and what can we do?

.

.

Let’s squarely put the blame on breeders and AKC for the loss of so much genetic diversity over the past decades, creating a breed that’s really kind of bred itself into a genetic corner.
Due to the bulldogs limited genes, breeders have very little to rebuild healthy phenotypes.

.

.

I feel that breeders should introduce new genes from outside such as some of these hybrid bulldogs ie: Olde, Victorians and Leavitt bred dogs that can boost the overall health of these animals. I doubt that the diehards will take this idea because the resulting dogs aren’t pedigreed and we’ll don’t look exactly like what today standard is wanting.

.

.

What are your thoughts about this?

Before your dog can’t respect you he must trust you and before he can trust you, he must bond with you. Bonding, trusting and respecting go all hand in hand.

.

.

Bonding; you may love your in-laws but share a bond with a high school friend. A Bond is earned and nourished to eventually build trust.

.

.

Trust; a dog is one of a few animals that can be beaten, discarded or neglected yet will love you or the next man easily as they have a trust in humans. Trust is present in a dogs nature.

.

.

Respect; is earned not given. Any working dog owner would understand this through and through as once a dog Respects you, you have a life long trust and bond with that animal no matter the situation.

We as a society love to stereotype. When it comes to the “BULL BREEDS” the media has been known to exacerbate the issues and fill the news with negativity due to their lack of education on the breeds and dogs in general, furthering distorting the public’s perception and conscience…

While cases of aggression in the BULL BREEDS does happen, they’re usually connected to other issues and again judged unfairly due to the negative reporting. A study performed in the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science (2008) provided scientific data on what breeds are statistically more aggressive than others. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania studied 6,000 dog owners of 33 different breeds and found that the DACHSHUND was most often the more aggressive dog breed when compared to other breeds, even to many of the BULL BREEDS…

The results of the study found:
“1 in 5 Dachshunds have bitten or had tried to bite a stranger and a similar number have attacked other dogs while 1 in 12 have snapped at their owners.” . .

Guess who’s number two on the list with similar data numbers, the tiny Chihuahua with their huge ego with the JACK RUSSELL TERRIER coming in third…

As for the stereotypical breeds, the results for those were average or below average when it came to aggression with the study focusing more on dogs that were aggressive towards strangers, owners and other dogs. In general, they all scored lower than the top three breeds
across the board…

As for my experience I’ve run across dogs of all breeds that have aggression issues including the BULL BREED and can attest to the snippy killer Dachshund attitude. I am not surprised by the results. Next time you come across a wiener dog, let’s hope you don’t run into a frankenweenie.
