The first of the GERMAN breeds to make the list and one that the average person would recognize over the majority of GUARD DOGS previously listed. The ROTTWEILER, ranked 9th most registered dog according to AKC registration continues to be popular despite being labeled the second most DANGEROUS DOG BREED by the Center of Disease Control.
.

.

Initially developed in GERMANY to be a CATTLE DOG and BEAR hunter, the breeds purpose has changed in today’s world where they are now utilized for POLICE, MILITARY, SPORT and of course GUARD WORK. A robust medium to large breed the ROTTIE is known for its biting prowess and once latching onto someone, it will through its body weight the opposite way to throw them off.
.

.

Although highly driven in both DEFENSE and PREY, the latter drive is commonly used to train the ROTTWEILER in SPORT and PPD training. Alert and responsive, trusting little of strangers makes this breed ideal for GUARD work. Lots of socializing and firm training early on is encouraged and when done successfully the breed excels as a family dog, but note MINOR CHILDREN should be supervised when around this breed.
.

.

With a larger than life presence, size, biting power and intimidation being a huge factor an intruder should think twice to approach its home. Many have said that the ROTTWEILER gives the appearance to be slow afoot but “get chased by one and see how slow they are” The breed is truly an ALPHA dog and has its reservations around other dogs.
.

.

Some defaults: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia is prominent within the breed. Adolescent arthritis and cataracts is too. Cancer and a high susceptibility to the PARVO VIRUS as a young pup.

The AMERICAN BULLDOG doesn’t have the flair as say a PRESA, PIT BULL or CANE CORSO does when one thinks of a premier GUARD DOG but don’t let the breed fool you. It ranks with any of those breeds with a true working dog history and titles to boot.
.

.

They’re three types of AB’s, the JOHNSON, SCOTT AND STANDARD TYPE, the last being a cross between the two former types. Ranking will be based off the STANDARD which in recent years has become the prominent and identifiable type of the breed and it’s in this cross that the best WORKING representatives has come about.

.

.

Some believe the AB to be the original BULLDOG brought over by EUROPEAN immigrants in the 1800’s. Those dogs were raw and bulldoggy, today’s STANDARD are more refined and athletic ranging in the 90 to 110lbs with some even larger. The breed has a rich history as a FARM GUARDIAN and CATCH DOG working closely with its human counterpart. A well grounded and loyal breed, it truly makes an excellent family dog making it a pleasure around children. These attributes along with a fearlessness towards strangers is a major plus for GUARD DOG duties.
.

.

The breed is exceptionally PREY driven a typical bulldog trait, mix in a optimal balance of DEFENSIVE drive to which it propels the breed as an above average GUARD DOG. This blend has also allowed the breed to excel in the dog sport arena (SCHUTZHUND, RING SPORT, PERSONAL PROTECTION) where it holds a heavy positive presence.

.

.

Some defaults: Hip, Elbow and Shoulder Dysplasia. Skin issues, joint and ligament mainly ACL tears and Cancer. Some dogs may exhibit breathing issues. Overall a hardy breed with a life span average of 10 to 14 years.

If you were asked to physically describe what a GUARD DOG breed would look like, the PRESA CANARIO would come to mind. The PRESA was bred to be a CATCH DOG (a dog used to catch large animals in hunts) a farm dog and guard throughout its history.
.

.

A large, muscular and athletic dog weighing in at around 130lbs. It’s a beast of a dog with fluidity, a slight attitude problem and a commanding presence which places it a HIGH INTIMIDATION factor. Dog and human aggression is also a concern. Firm training, early socialization and a direction of what you want from your dog is recommended.
.

.

The breed has caught the attention of many large dog enthusiast in recent years. As mentioned in the criteria breakdown, DEFENSE drive is the backbone of an optimal GUARD DOG. Its the second dog on the list (behind the CANE CORSO) featuring a balance of both drives, rather than just high DEFENSE. In my opinion the PRESA is better balanced dog than the CANE making it a more suitable choice as a sport or personal protection dog and therefore gaining a notch on this list.
.

.

Overall the PRESA isn’t the definition of a guard dog as would the TIBETAN MASTIFF or the NEO but because of its balance of drives, fierce loyalty for its family and the ability to further develop as a protection dog sets this breed apart from the others.
.
.
Some defaults: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Epilepsy, Entropion (Cherry eye) and for male dogs Crytorchidism (where one testicle does not descend) Maturation is slow in this breed as is the majority of all MASTIFF. The dogs take well to both warmer and colder climates, preferring cooler.

Prior to 1988 the CANE CORSO was non-existent in America. By 2014, it ranked 47th according to AKC registrations. On this list the CANE is the first GUARD DOG to exhibit a balanced ratio of DEFENSIVE & PREY drives.
.

.

At an average of 110lbs the CANE (pronounced ka-nee) is smaller than most MASTIFF. In recent years, 140+lbs dogs are becoming common, as long as their bred physically sound with a great temperament. Luckily for the breed, their are many dedicated enthusiasts that are focusing on working dogs rather than the show world.
.

.

The CANE CORSO is considered the only “Coursing” MASTIFF in the dog kingdom. Coursing; a sport of hunting game animals such as hares or larger game with sight rather than scent. There some debate over their history but that’s for another post. Overall this original idea of the breed contributed to a higher prey drive and athleticism.
.

.

The CANE excels as a personal protection and sport dog. Their high aptitude and athleticism is a potent combination and as mentioned in the beginning, the breed exhibits a balance of PREY and DEFENSE drives with the latter being useful for GUARD DOG duties. In a home setting, the CORSO is always “Johnny on the spot” and with some formal training, this breed excels as a guardian.
.

.

A loyal and docile dog around family settings, the breed can be stubborn and do enjoy their alone time (A plus for guard dog duties) with this lending to a moody and temperamental dog at times. When around small children and other small dogs, supervision is advised.
.

.

Some defaults: Hip & Elbow dysplasia, skin issues such a demodectic mange and gastric torsion (stomach bloat) otherwise the breed is a hardy dog with an average span of 9 – 12 years.

At Number 9 – (A) One of the oldest breeds of dogs with a history dating back centuries, the TIBETAN you see today is a semblance of what the breed used to be with differences being today a larger, more MASTIFF bred (Show dog) version. The TIBETAN is a very large dog that is surprisingly athletic and nimble for their size. It’s not uncommon for the modern TIBETAN to weigh upwards of 200lbs.

.
.

The TIBETAN is a defensive minded dog, a principal ingredient for a functional guard dog. Not as prey oriented as the NEO, with the difference being the breeds independent nature and hyper territorial attitude towards strangers. TIBETAN aren’t wanderers choosing to stay close to home and acclimated to harsh weather, they don’t mind being outside.

.
.

On one side, aloof and distrusting of strangers and on the other a highly tolerable dog of its family and loyal to a fault the TIBETAN needs socializing and training to tame the two (2) extremes. If someone believes the TIBETAN is the dog for them, I’d advise to acquire one as a puppy and to prepare to work with their dog well into adulthood. Maturation is slow, typical of a MASTIFF but they’re a clever breed that is adept to most anything thrown at them. Since their not prey driven, be careful of training with too much defensive pressure as they can become overly aggressive.

.

.

Some defaults: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Hypothyroidism and pupillary membranes (eye disorder) canine-inherited demyelinative neuropathy (look up) skin and weight issues. For a large dog, the breed has a longer than normal life span compared to other MASTIFF. Also beware of unscrupulous breeders and brokers selling the TIBETAN MASTIFF

.

“The essence of the Neapolitan Mastiff is his beastial appearance, astounding head and imposing size and attitude.” (AKC Neo standard)
.
.

At #10 the Neo. An extra large dog often weighing 120lbs plus, giving the breed a HIGH intimidation factor. Looks are deceiving, their sleepy and cumbersome appearance is only a facade as they’re sharper and more athletic than they present.
.

.

An intruder might mistake the Neo for a slow poke but in a yard setting, this dog can turn on like a light switch and catch you. For a MASTIFF they possess an above average defense drive and are surprisingly prey oriented. This combination allows them to stand out as a competent guard dog. The Neo can be STUBBORN and DETERMINED so firm training is imperative.
.
.

Socialization is also important, as they are known to be animal aggressive. Setting rules early and consistency in both training and socializing can be beneficial for their temperament as they mature. Alike most MASTIFFS they mature slowly and as the saying goes “wine ages with time” so does the Neo.
.

.

Throughout its history, the breed was known as a guard dog. Breeders preach the dog will naturally protect but modern Neo’s aren’t often bred or tested for this purpose. Minor protection training would help foster its natural tendencies. In my experiences working the breed in both guard & personal protection, I’m impressed with its acumen towards protection work. They bite hard, have good nerves, a great motor and very little fear.
.

.

Some defaults: drooling, hip dysplasia, skin issues, cherry eye, cardiomyopathy (heart condition) and hypothyroidism. They’re ideal for outside living (better cooler than warmer) but prefers to be indoors close to family which their very fond of. Strangers, not so much.
Someone bringing home a Neo will get their money’s worth.

is a dog who’s job is to prevent and protect from an intruder coming onto your property.

.

.

In the next few posts, I will be reintroducing the list of Top 10 Guard dog breeds and the reason why I choose them. This is the breakdown as to the criteria that I used for that list.
.
.

With 300 plus breeds of purpose to choose from it was difficult as I’m partial to many of them. Many on this list are dogs that I’ve personally had experience working/training/owning.
.

.

The focus of this “list” is to educate a future owner of a “guard dog” and to share my knowledge and personal experience of each breed so they can better decipher which breed is better suit for there purpose.
.
.

CRITERIA:

.

.

Physical; with size varying from 40 to 200 plus lbs. for a typical guard dog. It would be the discretion of the potential owner on the decision to choose.
.

.

Drive; the majority of “guard dogs” rely on “Defense” drive, defined as “A means of protecting something from attack” Defense comes down to a response called – Fight or Flight.
.

.

A dog’s self-confidence in a stressful situation dictates what he’s gonna do when the pressure is on. A dog that exhibits a strong (FIGHT) drive will stand his ground (ideal for a guard dog), whereas a dog lacking a strong defensive (FIGHT) drive will be unsure in the situation choosing to run (FLIGHT) and react cowardly.
.
.

Aptitude; the word STUBBORN is attached to many of the breeds listed. In the breakdown I took into consideration their trainability as well as sociability with his master and family.
.
.

Overall; intimidation factor, history and stigma all played a role as well with my experience with the breeds.

As we commemorate the 18th anniversary of 9/11, let’s honor the more than 300 dogs who helped search for survivors.

.

.

Many of the rescues dogs searching at the World Trade Centre in 2001 suffered from depression because they did not find survivors. When a SAR dog (Search and Rescue) continues to not find live people like on that day, they lose motivation and don’t feel rewarded.

.

.

The first picture is of Trakr who was driven down from Nova Scotia by his handler. He found the last known survivor from ground zero, Genelle Guzman. When his handler, Symington, was seen on TV by his department in Canada, he was suspended for leaving without permission. Trakr died in April of 09

.

.

On the second picture, Sirius is the only known K9 death. He was an explosive detection K9. He was in the South tower when the North tower was hit. His handlers last words to him were, “I think we’re in a lot of trouble. I will be back for you.” His handler locked him in his kennel before helping victims.

The story goes, these two pit bull bulls became feral (a dog that has escaped domestication and returned partly or wholly to a wild state) weeks after Hurricane Katrina had passed, they were hungry and attacked the Bull. Photo’s we’re captured by a reporter for the Sunday Telegraph who eventually flagged down National Guardsmen who shot and killed both dogs.

Posting this for all to see, this isn’t to shame anyone but to continue to educate.

.

.

On my stories I posed a question (watch the story again to see for yourself), is it ok for the puppy to lay down even though I told her to sit/stay after a minute or so into the command but I didn’t correct her. Was this OK?

.

.

It was ok, which is why all that answered “YES” said so. Part of the training is to also teach the puppy PATIENCE. A patient puppy will grow up to be a more patient adult and will happily remain on a longer sit as it gets older, wiser and trained/conditioned for the command.

.

.

Lastly I’d like to add, all those that answered YES are clients of mine. So thank you to all of you guys for remembering the training we’ve done with your dog! For those that still don’t understand, DM me and I’ll explain in more detail or just train your dog with me and you’ll get all my expertise of training for your dog! ✌🏽
