ᴇᴅɪᴛᴏʀɪᴀʟ
.
.

In August 2000, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) published their “Law Enforcement Canine Model Policy”. This was the first time in the history of police canine where a law enforcement association recommended a training philosophy of “bark and hold”. Their model policy stated “Training and deployment of police canines shall employ the “guard and bark” rather than the “guard and hold” method”. IACP has re-issued this model policy in September 2001. IACP still remains the only law enforcement association that has recommended this training philosophy.
.
.

The idea of the hold and bark has its importance in evaluating temperament and character of the dog in the areas of courage and fighting drives for a sport such as Schutzhund, but can be enforced for civilian use if more departments trained for it. The problem with law enforcement is that most Departments view it as “sport bullshit” and not viewed with enough importance, as their views are “if the perpetrator runs, he should get bit”
.
.

I can see how it can be scary for a criminal who is running from a dog to try to listen to the officers/handlers command to stop moving when a dog is upon them and it’s not always that easy for a dog to distinguish if a criminal is trying to stop in live action. Therefore its probably not going to happen in the majority of cases but if more departments enforce the rule and dogs are taught correctly then the chances of departments being sued can and should go down over time.

Actual and Factual:
.
.

Borzoi are bigger than you think, with adult males standing at least 28 inches and up to 32 inches high at the shoulders and weighing upwards of 100 plus pounds. For a large dog, they eat a relatively small amount compared to another dog their size.
.
.

The Borzoi is a type of sighthound that uses their eyes to find and chase their prey while they hunt. They happen to also be a part of the Hound group that use their noses to locate and follow the scent of prey. Although they are sighthounds, Borzoi can be taught to detect and follow smells
.
.

Lure coursing was created to allow sight hounds like the Borzoi to compete in simulated hunting situations. The course consists of a zigzag path of at least 500 yards with a motorized line-and-pulley system which pulls a plastic lure, usually made of strips of white garbage bags, and the dogs are released to run after it.
.
.

Borzoi’s are fast, very fast running and reaching speeds up 40mph. The breed is a relatively quiet breed, somewhat cat-like in its personality. Lastly the breed is somewhat popular ranking at 99th on AKC most popular list.

If the Borzoi was human, doesn’t it remind anyone of a Supermodel? Tall, slender with an Aristocratic background.
.
.

The Borzoi was once known as the Russian Wolfhound for its hunting ability of wolves and small prey. In 1936 the name was changed to the Borzoi (translates to “fast” in Russian)The Borzoi originated in Russia as a prized hunting dog, bred by aristocrats as a coursing sighthound. It is believed that its predecessors were ancient sighthound breeds dating back to Egyptian times crossing with now extinct native dogs of Russia.
.
.

According to the American Kennel Club, “from the time of Ivan the Terrible in the mid-1500s to the abolition of serfdom in 1861, hunting with Borzoi was the national sport of the aristocracy.” It was during these times that hare coursing became popular as well as the pursuit of wolves where the hunts were
extravagant affairs involving elaborate attire, feasting and festivity. The breed was pampered and promoted by Russian royalty on a grand scale unparalleled in the development of any other breed.
.
.

In 1842 Princess Alexandra of Britain were sent several Borzoi as gifts. Many of the offspring were exhibited at the first Crufts World Dog Show in 1891. In 1863, the Imperial Association was formed to protect and promote the old-style Borzoi. Many present day bloodlines can trace back to dogs and breeders who were members of this club.
.
.

The first Borzoi in America was brought from England in 1889 by a fancier of the breed living in Pennsylvania. The Borzoi Club of America was formed in November of 1903, with the breed still called the “Russian Wolfhound” The official breed standard was formally adopted in 1905 and is essentially remains the same today, with minor revisions. The breed’s name was changed from Russian Wolfhound to Borzoi in 1936, and the parent club’s name changed to the Borzoi Club of America that same year. The breed today is largely unchanged from its Russian ancestors in both appearance and ability.

This is when you know you’re either dealing with a novice or a dumbass. This way of thinking is not uncommon, some people believe that a dog must be mean and aggressive to make a good protection dog. This idea is so far from the truth.
.
.

If a protection dog is there to protect you, then he should be there next to you the whole time, where ever you are, with whom ever you might be around whether that be humans, dogs, horses, it doesn’t matter.
.
.

Now if we were to think the way some of those people believe then your protection dog wouldn’t be there to protect you. He’ll be too aggressive to handle and would growl and try to bite anyone that is around you. Human, dog, horse, you get it. In a nutshell you’ll have to kennel him.
.
.

So this deceives the point of raising and training a dog in that manner. I felt sorry for the pup as he was a friendly little guy. I’ll write up a better explanation in the coming post. In the meantime your thoughts and comments on this would be much appreciated….

The Chow Chow’s is known for its black tongue but why and how the breed end up wit it?
.
.

The Chow Chow is an ancient breed with a history dating back thousands of years known as the Wun Der years. The origin of the Chow’s black tongue has been a mystery until now and scientists believe to have an answer. Chow’s are born with a pink tongue, pups born with a black tongue are a throwback and genetically related to the first Chow – Mr Chow which coincidentally how they got their name.
.
.

As lore goes Mr Chow was owned by the local medicine doctor, Chinese food and donut owner and breeder of the Foo Yu Cray bruh dogs and Shar Pei, Pei Pei Luoung X (pee-pee long time) He began feeding the dogs the Lingzhi mushroom (known in China as the Spirit Mushroom) believing it would give them extra lives in battle, when they died they’d revive. A scientist by the name of Dr. Pepper proved that Lingzhi produce a secretion that changed the molecular structure of the dogs giving them the famous Black tongue, itchy skin and ferocious hallucinating mood swings.
.
.

General Sun Yua Foo of the Fu King dynasty and leader of The Imperial Army of China heard of the dogs with the black tongue that die and come alive from local villagers who at the time called them Dum Mi and ordered 10,000 dogs for his army. This lead to an explosion of the breed and its popularity that rumor has it the dogs replaced children and it was the reason for one child per parents in the country.
.
.

The Lingzhi had one fall back, Dr Pepper related the mushroom to crack cocaine in that it creates a powerful and severe addiction. It is a strong stimulant that energizes the central nervous system and saliva sacs producing the black tongue, similar to how crack gives black lips.
.
.

So next time you see a Chow Chow and their famous black tongue, know the history of the Dum Mi for believing it. April Foo…..

What four lines can tell us about soundness in…

What four lines can tell us about soundness in conformation
.
.

Properly using the Four Lines of Balance requires observing a dog in person or using a photo of the dog in the correct position. Either mentally or actually drawing lines in a photo to recreate the four lines of balance.
.
.

The first illustration is a young American Pit Bull Terrier in the correct position to be examined. His hocks and front legs are perpendicular to the ground and the photo is straight from the side, level with the dog not looking down on it.
.
.

The first line is Line “A” line drawn on the dog’s top line. If you aren’t sure exactly where the dog’s top line begins, draw the line beginning past the head, beginning from its shoulder. The dog’s entire head must be above this line when held in a natural position.
.
.

Line “B” is the single most important line. This line starts at the dog’s pro-sternum and runs directly back past the end of the dog’s body. The pro-sternum is that pointy lump on the front of the dog’s chest. The pro-sternum almost always indicates the position of the dog’s point of shoulder. It is common for the pro-sternum line to be placed far too low on the dog’s body, so be aware of placing so the line divides the dog in a perfect half and balance.
.
.

For Line “C” imagine a line dropped from the dog’s point of rear to the ground. With the dog’s hocks absolutely perpendicular to the ground, the line should drop to the front of the dog’s rear toes.
.
.

Line “D” is drawn up the front leg of the dog, with the legs perpendicular to the ground. The balanced dog will have its entire neck in front of this line.
