Have you’ve ever wonder why puppies brea…

Have you’ve ever wonder why puppies breath smells the way it does? It begins with a healthy puppy and a hearty dose of its mother’s milk. The lactose in her milk smells sweet and digest easily. The digestive enzymes in your puppy’s stomach breaks down the proteins in her milk which adds to the sweet aroma. Some VETERINARIANS believe that puppy breath may be the result of its esophagus developing.
.
.

If a puppy has bad breath, then it could indicate a serious health problem. The first thing a veterinarian would look at is their teeth. In adult dogs, a problem like gum disease and impacted teeth could lead to bad breath but since a puppy’s teeth are still developing, it’s highly unlikely a foul odor is the result of a dental problem. Checking and cleaning your puppy’s mouth is a good habit to begin while young as they usually don’t like being bothered with when they’re older.
.
.

Intestinal Parasites is another common cause of bad breath. Worms can be passed from the mother to their young through pregnancy and through their milk. Indications of parasites are vomiting, diarrhea, lack of weight gain, brittle hair and coughing. Puppies should be treated and dewormed as early as 5 weeks. A severe worm infestation can cause death.
.
.

Coprophagia is the term, its when dogs eat their own stool. A stage in a pups development is using their mouths much like a person use their hands to touch, feel and learn everything about the world around them. This can possibly lead to why some dogs continue to eat their stool as they get older. This habit will usually go away as the pup matures but some pups can continue the same way a child would suck on a thumb if not stopped by a parent.

28 years of experience in the dog business and I’ve yet to meet a (perfect) dog or person. When your dog makes a mistake, stop and teach them so they learn from it.
.
.

When we don’t show them what’s right and over look the mistake, we are at fault for procrastinating as well as sending the wrong signal to your dog that making mistakes has no consequences.
.
.

We all (dogs and humans) make mistakes. That’s life. It’s how we handle those mistakes is what’s important. All we can do is turn them into learning experiences and use them to grow.
.
.

Dogs will make mistakes, but his owner will do more.

Jumping is a common complaint when it comes to…

Jumping is a common complaint when it comes to dog ownership. When you come home from a long day of work, your dog incessantly jumps happy to see you or god forbid you’re all dressed up to go to a party and your dog jumps on you and now your wardrobe and possibly night is ruined. Let alone having company over and your dog doesn’t know how to act and begins jumping on them the minute they walk in and you wonder how all this began.
.
.

What’s funny is that it could have all been resolved when your dog was a puppy and you played a major role in perpetuating the behavior and didn’t know it. When your dog was a puppy and he came to greet you, he jumped on your leg and you began petting and playing with him unintentionally cultivating this behavior and with every praise it you reinforced what would eventually become a nuisance.
.
.

Now that we’ve identify where you went wrong and for those new puppy owners reading this firstly don’t allow your puppy to jump on you. Instead, teach the puppy to sit before being petted. Continue to reinforce the SIT command every time you greet your puppy. After some time, he’ll understand in order to get praised or your attention, he must sit first. Continue with the same plan when he greets anyone else, family members, friends and strangers always making sure that he SITS before he is acknowledged. Before you know it, he’ll get the hang of it and it will become second nature to SIT instead of jumping when you come home.

Do you find your dog listening better to one f…

Do you find your dog listening better to one family member over the other? When training for a family, it is important to have them work together as one. It can become complicated as it’s ONE dog being trained by different people within the household, who all have different personalities, habits and mannerisms.
.
.

This can be unfair to the dog where it does not fully understand the differences of each persons personality and views everyone in a different pecking order from one another.
.
.

It’s often the inability of family members to work as a team on their dog training needs that adds to the difficulties for the dog to gain a grasp of what’s being taught. Many times one family member would relay a command and get a result whereas another member would relay the same command and the dog would not do it. This confusion is common and its not always a RESPECT thing from the dog, it’s how family members have different views as to how the pet should be treated and disciplined.
.
.

Ex: one family member might not always correct the dog when it comes to a stop to SIT while another member would in every instance. This can lead to confusion and discrepancy in the dog.
.
.

Ex: a member of the home might not mind the dog getting on the sofa, while the other might always get upset and correct the dog for its behavior, which in turn causes confusion for the dog.
.
.

In the end, everyone must be on the same page. Everyone must learn how to work and handle the dog and everyone in the home must come into an agreement as to the direction that will eventually lead them to the promised land, a functional member of the household.

Training with me doesn’t always have to …

Training with me doesn’t always have to be “walking in the middle of a park and making your dog do sit and heel commands” it comes down to learning how to communicate with your pet.
.
.

Anyone who’s worked with me knows that I try to explain every step of the way:
.
.

what your dog is doing
.
.

why he’s doing it
.
.

and what’s he going to do next.
.
.

A more educated client is a better client. A client that knows his dog, how to read his dog and who’s connected with his dog will make a better owner and friend for his pet.
.
.

Those of you who’s trained with me, share with others how you’ve learned about your dog and what I’m talking about down below 👇🏽

Let’s face it, we can all be inconsisten…

Let’s face it, we can all be inconsistent in areas of our lives. So when it comes to training your dog I can see how one can be lazy. You hired a dog trainer to TRAIN your dog but you must understand that in order to get your dog to work for you, you must also put in work and be CONSISTENT with how you handle your dog.
.
.

There is one thing if the person doesn’t earn the respect of his dog and expects the dog to do what he’s been taught, it’s another when they know how to handle their dogs but are too inconsistent with caring about their dogs behavior in one situation and not in another.
.
.

Inconsistency in dog training can lead to future behavior problems when there is none. Dogs basically understand RIGHT or WRONG, the BLACK and WHITE of things.
.
.

Look at it this way, if 9 out of 10 times you keep your dog from jumping on you, but on that 10th time you relent, it is that moment that your dog feels like he won and succeeded. That my friends is what keeps DOGS CONSISTENTLY trying. The point is you’re the superior animal here, don’t allow the dog to get his way. Try to be more consistent in what you trained for, what you want and what you expect. Your dog will thank you for it in the end.

Your dog can never be too old or too young to …

Your dog can never be too old or too young to start training (within reason). Same can be said for a person, (again, within reason) Everyone must be involved, if they want their dog to listen.
.
.

Obviously aside from teaching a child RESPONSIBILITY, like having to remember to feed, provide fresh water, and to clean up after their dog. A relationship that develops can be life-changing for a child as they themselves continue to grow and develop.
.
.

When training a dog, I press to my clients how important PATIENCE is to teach their dogs. In turn, dogs teach children patience as a dog can be frustrating. Puppies like to nip and chew, scratch, jump and slobber while getting to children’s toys and destroying them as it’s theirs. Patience teaches children restrain all the while to teach without yelling and/or hitting a dog.
.
.

What I know for sure is that dogs teach children COMPASSION, understanding the feeling of emotions and pain.  As dogs have short lives, and a child would more than likely be there for their dogs entire life cycle, a lesson however hard it may be is an invaluable lesson for a child as they comfort their dog and cope with their loss.
.
.

And most importantly how much FUN they will have with their best friend and pet by all the interaction they’ll have throughout their lifetime. From dressing them up, to taking them for walks. Spending time training and playing fetch. Your dog is always their through good and bad days as they’re always there to cheer you up.
