My series of Working dogs we hardly hear or talk about.
.
.

The men who developed the Airedale didn’t come from Aristocracy or weren’t Gentlemen of the sporting dog world but everyday Working Class people. They were mostly farmers and hunters living near the Ayre (Aire) and Wharfe Rivers near Yorkshire, England.
.
.

Around 1860’s in that region of England a “do everything” type dog was needed that could control vermin as well as bring in birds for the table. A dog with the courage to stay in the fight and protect, a dog of high character, surely a weather resistant coat, not to mention exemplary hunting instincts and the gentleness to be a family dog. Strong swimming attributes as well as being an efficient bird dog was also on the list of needs.
.
.

An assortment of breeds contributed to the creation of the AIREDALE. As was common in those days, many breeds were mixed that had the attributes needed for the dog to be fulfilled. It is believed the now extinct Black and Tan terrier, Otterhound, Broken-Coated Terrier and English Bull terrier contributed towards the creation of the breed with other Terrier breeds which may or may not have been mixed in. The end product first become known as the Waterside Terrier, then the Bingley Terrier, and finally by 1879 the Airedale terrier.
.
.

Dog writer Holland Buckley wrote a book called “The Airedale Terrier” (c. 1900), in which he stated “he [the Airedale] is a three-in-one gun dog combining the virtues of the pointer, spaniel and retriever.” Alas the breed was finally considered a Sporting Dog where it’s popularity in North America grew quickly becoming the most popular breed in the United States between the 1920’s and 30’s.
.
.

The breeds popularity waned for years after due to many factors, one of which is the choices of other working breeds. In the past 30 plus years, Airedale fanciers has successfully restored the breeds versatility as a hunting dog and one of purpose.

When you look at the picture, what do you see?…

When you look at the picture, what do you see? A man that’s in shape, fit, muscular, skinny/thin/lithe as opposed to not FAT and athletic.
.
.

This is the idea of what a man that’s in shape would look like. SWIPE TO THE LEFT and we’re back at the picture that brought this post on. I’ve noticed comments on how the dog is too SKINNY but in reality that’s what a dog that is in it’s optimal workout shape should look like. An athlete.
.
.

Again, I’d like for those viewing this post to swipe left again and see what a dog that is too SKINNY looks like and know the difference. Emaciated and peak conditioning are two distinctly different physical forms.
.
.

In the end it comes to perception, you might perceive that the dog in the second picture is too skinny but the reality that’s what’s called “conditioned weight” so if you think it’s skinny, heck yeah he’s skinny but it’s a dog low on body fat and high in muscularity.

Flashback Friday with @jager_the_malinois
.

Any trainer bringing home a puppy will begin socializing, conditioning and training the minute they touch home. So why do trainers tell you to begin training when the puppy is closer to six (6) month of age?
.
.

One of the answer is most trainers don’t want to deal with puppies from a young age as it’s a lot of work to guide the puppy and owner for months. I’ve worked with trainers who were taught from schools that teach DOG TRAINING and they’re verbiage is that by 6 months old the possibility that it will develop bad habits and behavioral issues in that time span are higher and it’s good for business as they can charge more for work that has to be undone.
.
.

Being that it’s #flashbackfriday I’m posting a few pics of jager beginning with the puppy tug in bite work and where he is today. Follow his page to see our adventures.

When working in agitation training it’s …

When working in agitation training it’s important to follow directions. An agitator is putting himself in a situation that can be dangerous if precautions are not taken and of course following directions.
.
.

At the same time, a bad decoy (agitator) can physically and mentally ruin your dog if they’re not experienced enough in working with dogs and/or misreads the dog. Broken teeth, legs and neck have happened out on the field and will continue to if precautions and directions aren’t followed.
.
.

Now go ahead and watch the video and see how fast things can go wrong when directions are not followed.

¢αυ¢αѕιαи σν¢нαякα #1A . . The list is coming…

¢αυ¢αѕιαи σν¢нαякα #1A
.
.

The list is coming to an end and another Cold War dog is on top, do the RUSSIANS know something we don’t? At 1-A the CAUCASIAN OVCHARKA is one of the oldest GUARD DOG breeds listed. The ALABAI and CENTRAL ASIAN OVCHARKA are breeds similar to the OVCHARKA, and can be considered under the same ranking.
.
.

A breed native of the Caucasus mountains, it is one of the oldest molosser breeds sharing its heritage with many of the Soviet funded Red Star Kennel, a military based K9 facility. The breed was utilized in many of the new breed creations the famed kennel produced for military use during the Cold War.
.
.

Throughout my rankings I’ve touched on how important DEFENSIVE drives are for the construction of a great guard dog. The OVCHARKA is the epitome of what we call a DEFENSIVE monster. I read somewhere describing the breed, to get chased and bit by this breed is like getting hit by a 357 magnum. I don’t know what it feels like to be shot by a gun but I do know what it feels like being charged and bitten by this breed, and I’ll say you’ll probably not be alive to tell the story of how you got away.
.
.

The OVCHARKA is a true working dog thats comfortable as a family dog. Due to its untrusting nature, he should not be trusted around strangers. An extra large dog with some weighing as much as 200lbs with thick coats, the breed does well in colder climates but can acclimate to warmer weather. A experienced and firm handler should own this dog and training at an early age is highly advisable since the breed is very dominant. Although the breed is a loyal family member when raised socially, I wouldn’t advice young children without supervision.
.
.

Some defaults: as with all large breed, hips, shoulder and elbows are of concern. A relatively modest life span is to be expected (9 -11yrs) especially for a dog of this size.

We’re at the halfway point and the remai…

We’re at the halfway point and the remaining breeds from here on out are the cream of the crop when it comes to GUARD DOG duties. The BOERBOEL is not only an exception but the rule as it’s a beast on four legs. The BOERBOEL is not as vocal as many of the dogs on the list but their bark will scare your neighbor down the block. Imagine a 150lb plus GAME PIT that’s ready to go on a whim yet complacent that it knows it doesn’t have to be loud to get your attention due to their intimidating size and athleticism.
.
.

The breed is renown for his GUARD DOG abilities in its native country of SOUTH AFRICA as the word “Boerboel” derives from “boer” (pronounced boo-r-bull) the AFRIKAAN/DUTCH word for farmer while the word “boel” is an old slang for DOG translating as FARMER DOG” It is today widely known as the only South African dog breed created to DEFEND (hence guard) the homestead due to its strong territorial instincts. The HISTORY of the BOERBOEL was for the purpose of being a GUARDIAN and it upholds this ideal to the fullest. A couple of old time breeders have shared with me one of the reasons the dog was bred for was to keep people of color in control.
.
.

A large, powerful and nimble breed the DEFENSIVE prowess is on point, pair it with its high PREY drive and the dog will hunt down any intruder and bring’em back to your door step to show you what they found. One who is interested in the breed should be an experienced large dog owner. This breed needs early socialization and training to get them to understand what is expected of them. This is surely the breed that starting at 10 weeks versus at 10 months will make the difference.
.
.
Some defaults: Hip Dysplasia and other joint issues. Juvenile Epilepsy and Bloat are also as well. Generally another very hardy breed with an average life span between 10 and 12 years.

αмєяι¢αи вυℓℓ∂σg . . The AMERICAN BULLDOG does…

αмєяι¢αи вυℓℓ∂σg
.
.
The AMERICAN BULLDOG doesn’t have the flair as say a PRESA, PIT BULL or CANE CORSO does when one thinks of a premier GUARD DOG but don’t let the breed fool you. It ranks with any of those breeds with a true working dog history and titles to boot.
.
.
They’re three types of AB’s, the JOHNSON, SCOTT AND STANDARD TYPE, the last being a cross between the two former types. Ranking will be based off the STANDARD which in recent years has become the prominent and identifiable type of the breed and it’s in this cross that the best WORKING representatives has come about.
.
.

Some believe the AB to be the original BULLDOG brought over by EUROPEAN immigrants in the 1800’s. Those dogs were raw and bulldoggy, today’s STANDARD are more refined and athletic ranging in the 90 to 110lbs with some even larger. The breed has a rich history as a FARM GUARDIAN and CATCH DOG working closely with its human counterpart. A well grounded and loyal breed, it truly makes an excellent family dog making it a pleasure around children. These attributes along with a fearlessness towards strangers is a major plus for GUARD DOG duties.
.
.

The breed is exceptionally PREY driven a typical bulldog trait, mix in a optimal balance of DEFENSIVE drive to which it propels the breed as an above average GUARD DOG. This blend has also allowed the breed to excel in the dog sport arena (SCHUTZHUND, RING SPORT, PERSONAL PROTECTION) where it holds a heavy positive presence.
.
.

Some defaults: Hip, Elbow and Shoulder Dysplasia. Skin issues, joint and ligament mainly ACL tears and Cancer. Some dogs may exhibit breathing issues. Overall a hardy breed with a life span average of 10 to 14 years.

ριт вυℓℓ #7 . Possibly the most controversial …

ριт вυℓℓ #7
.
Possibly the most controversial breed on the list, speak to an owner of a PIT BULL and you’ll hear positive and endearing comments. To everyone else, the breed is public enemy number one. Note: included in this ranking will be the AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER as they have similar temperaments and abilities for GUARD WORK, everything else, the breeds aren’t the same.
.
.
The PITBULL was bred to be a FIGHTING DOG, while the AM STAFF was the show counterpart. Throughout history it was widely known to be people friendly as aggressive dogs were not tolerated, so back then to tout the breed as a guard dog goes against the grain. True DOG MEN would have another breed protecting their kennel and property.
.
.
With an overwhelming loyalty of family and home, the right balance of DEFENSE and unlimited amount of PREY, guarding duties is second nature for a task as simple as a GUARD DOG. Add a great aptitude towards training, aloofness towards strangers, superb athleticism ranging from 30 to 80lbs and always on alert helps this breed to fit in an experienced home in need of a comparable GUARD DOG. Today the breed has evolved into an all around dog excelling in sport, service, police and even herding work.
.
.
Indiscriminate breeding of inferior dogs has lent to the majority of problems we see today. In recent years the breed has been misrepresented by both unfit ownership and media. Despite negative media reports the PITBULL excels with children due to their high toleration and even temper. Although the breed can be aggressive towards dogs and animals, early proper socialization, firm training and compatible ownership can control their behavior. Overall the PIT BULL is a cut above the rest in a smaller but just as powerful package .
.
.
Some defaults: Hip and Elbow dysplasia, heart disease and patella luxation. Otherwise a very hardy breed. Photo cred: tagged

There is a distinct difference between a dog I train for protection and having someone else train your dog.
.
.
If an intruder enters your house, the dog trained by someone else will bark to let you know someone’s there.
.
.
If your dog is trained by me, you’ll won’t hear a bark, because you’ll hear the intruder yelling for help.
.
.
28 years of experience training dogs so I can hear the bad guy yell. That’s real conversation for yo ass!

There are differences between breeds, then differences between…

There are differences between breeds, then differences between individual dogs of the same breed. The one fundamental skill that’s required by creditable breeders and show judges alike is understanding breed history, function and purpose.
.
.
Working dogs such as the one pictured above must possess power, speed and agility to serve its purpose. So length of body and legs as is on this “working bull terrier” is important to adequately do the job it’s intended to do.
