Today’s #mastiff of the day hasn’t physically changed much in the last 100 years, if not more. (Hint) it shares a name with a popular shoe (sneakers) line.

For bonus points, their temperament is what characterizes the breed. Give the name of what enthusiast calls their “temperaments”

Im sure it’s pretty obvious what the breed is, but does anyone know the other names that this breed goes by?

For bonus points, I did a write up about another breed connected to this breed, that has something to do with its name. Can anyone name both of the breeds….

The debate will rage on of the true origin of the #Mastiff breed. Their will also be those that don’t agree on what colors are acceptable. This MASTIFF doesn’t usually come in the color above but some devotees of the breed might differ.

This dog is a great specimen for what the breed should be. Straight lines, tight skin and the correct curvature in his stiffles. Working weight and conditioning, considering many keep them fat. I get the feeling he has a motor in him.

But does he work, like some of those @calicatchers dogs? Only one person got the last dog right. What breed is this? #askstdt

We’ve finally begun the ground work with Rocky…

We’ve finally begun the ground work with Rocky and I’m pretty happy with his obedience, which will only get better since we’re introducing bite work.
.
.

Every dog is different in its learning curve and the drives toward protection work varies as well. Some dogs are what we call “prey monsters” in that they like to chase and grab anything thrown at them. Then they’re dogs like Rocky, which are more “Defensive” minded. A little antagonizing can go a long way.
.
.

They end results can be the same whichever way you take to reach the goal, only thing is the latter (defense) can produce a more aggressive type dog if not trained right from the beginning.
.
.

Don’t just let anyone tell you it’s easy to train dogs for bite work, it literally is an Art form in terms of teaching, building, creating and the final product. It can be dangerous to both the handler and trainer as well as for the public if a dog is not trained properly. The key to “protection training” is making it a game and having fun with your dog. A dog should never view bite work training as a chore, but as something fun and to look after. If they take it too serious, then you’re in for some serious problems in the end.

Scooby Doo and Marmaduke are both Great Danes,…

Scooby Doo and Marmaduke are both Great Danes, but are they really?
.
.

The name “Great Dane” was given by the French naturalist Comte de Buffon. History tells us during his travels in Denmark, he came upon a breed and saw a big but lightly built Boar Hound (early Dane like dogs) which resembled a Greyhound and remarked that “the Danish climate had caused the Greyhound to become the Grand Danois (Great Dane)” shortly thereafter the dogs became known as the Great Danish Dog err Great Dane.
.
.

The real Great Dane is the Broholmer, a true big Mastiff type dog from Denmark. A large yet agile dog with some weighing upwards to 150lbs. The breed is very rare outside of Denmark with only about 1200 totaling the world and 250 outside of its native country.
.
.

Broholmer’s were once hugely popular in Denmark and was well-known for its versatility. The Broholmer was a prized possession, used by Danish nobility as a guard dog and as a hunting dog of large animals (deer, boar, etc) as well as by farmers as a farmhand who would assist in the handling of uncooperative pigs and bulls. The breed were highly respected that Broholmers were often given as a gift by royalty and aristocrats to their peers in Europe.
.
.

A generally mild tempered and a highly social dog, the breed may seem intimidating but a conscious effort has been placed by the few dedicated breeders in its community to produce a calmer, gentler animal than what was once need many years ago.
.
.

In the early 1500s, King Frederick II posed for a painting with the breed, while in the 1700s, King Frederick VII and Countess Danner owned several Broholmers (many of which they gave the same name: Tyrk). This link to the monarchy has guaranteed the breed as a whole a very regal standing in history.
.
.

So for those discriminating few that want something very few people outside Europe owns, check out the Broholmer.

MY FAVORITE HOUND DOG COLLECTION CONTINUES&hel…

MY FAVORITE HOUND DOG COLLECTION CONTINUES….
.
.

The first citation of a “basset” style dog appeared in La Venerie, an illustrated hunting text written by Jacques du Fouilloux in 1585 which features dogs hunting foxes and badgers. The Basset Hound originated in sixth-century France, a country known for its many strains of hounds. What is not commonly known, at the time many strains of hounds had a tall version as well as a short-legged version which stood under sixteen inches, which were called “basset”(bas in French means low-set).
.
.

The most common belief is that the Basset type originated as a mutation in the litters of Norman Staghounds, a descendant of the St Hubert’s Hound (the predecessor to the Bloodhound) The original Bloodhounds were used for hunting from horseback by aristocratic families but the short-legged dogs were highly valued for hunting on foot. with their long ears helping to capture scent (much like the Bloodhound) packs of Bassets were used to drive small prey from dense undercover into open fields where hunters could move in for the kill. The sport of pack hunting with Basset Hounds continues to this day in France and England.

WHAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE REAL B…

WHAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE REAL BOXER!
.
.

The breed lends its existence to the now extinct, the Brabanter Bullenbeisser (Brabant, in northern Belgium) a Molosser type dog that hunted large prey and its generally accepted today to be a direct descendant of today’s Boxer. With the eventual crossing of the Old English Bulldogge (not to be confused with AKC idea of a Bulldog) the breed began to take shape. The physical features that today make up the breed were thought to be intentional and bred for specific “working and hunting” reasons.
.
.

An undershot jaw in most breeds today is destined for disqualification but it is permitted in the Boxer standard since it was thought to allow the breed to bite down onto his prey and to continue holding on until its master arrived, serving purpose as a hunting dog.
.
.

The wrinkled face of a Boxer served a purpose as well and was thought to aid in the prevention of excess blood from dripping onto its eyes as it diverted through its wrinkles towards its side of its face. While the actual validity of this is up to debate, the feature largely stems from the Bulldog blood added in its inception.
.
.

Today the flat faced dogs (brachycephalic) a large, wide opened nostril, set high and back on its face tend to have breathing and health issues, at the time it was believed to be beneficial, allowing the dog to breathe better while it held onto its prey. This today as we know is false.
.
.

The most common color in Boxers is Brindle. The Brindling was believed to be a camouflage while hunting, allowing the dog to blend into its surroundings and environment.
.
.

The addition of the original Bulldog blood was indeed the major ingredient to the creation of the breed as it was specifically bred to be an exemplary working dog with a goal to create an actual hunting and working dog with the tenacity and courage of the bulldog, gift wrap in the form of the Boxer.
